I'm sure it's the foggy haze of 'things were better then' but, they were...
faster
smoother
better controls
better mechlab
etc etc etc
although I'll admit it was just deadthmatch style play with no real MMO aspect

And everyone dies instantly from an alpha strike to the leg.
Don't get me wrong, I loved MW3. Almost as much as the MW2 generation of games. It had a great look and feel, wonderful graphics and atmosphere, and a solid campaign. But as a competitive FPS / sim, well ... it wasn't really designed to be that. I like to remember it fondly for the things it did well. I don't really think multiplayer was one of them, personally.
Just my two cents.

Very much like Rift was - great game, but terrible pvp. Well, nevermind, Rift sucked all the way around. MW3 was a great game, but pvp wasn't its strong point.

Then why did it have such a big online following? You could play 24/7 and never have a lag in finding a game with decent players. I thought PvP was great, sure the lag shooting sucked, but it did add an element of required skill unintended by the developers.
I joined a merc corp that actually taught me how to lag shoot, we'd have training sessions to practice tactics and shooting skill. To join the very best merc corps, you had to pass a qualifying match against a player of sufficient rank and skill within the corp. People even got promotions for being good.
Now granted all of this was roleplay and had no bearing on the actual game, and it was all just "bragging rights", but it was something that this game doesn't have yet.
With no ability to change your pilot name, how are you supposed to tack a rank on the end, or a merc corp sig so you can show your rank and alliance with pride?
MW3 cost $40 for the box (which would equate to $60 now propably), you got a campaign, tutorial, online play, and social interaction through MSN Gaming Zone chats.
How many people in this "beta" have spent more than that already for less content and less social interaction ability?
This game would be more accurately compared if it went up against say, Battlefield 2 or 3 (because both games have match play, character advancement, and rudimentary inmatch chat), except again in the long run you'd propably shell out more money for this game to get complete content access than you would just paying a $60 box price for BF2 or 3.
But I am a Mechwarrior fan, so despite all this, I will wait and see what they do with it, and keep a flame of optimism burning. I'm hoping it doesn't just end up being a F2P to scratch the Mechwarrior itch once in a while for some match play.

It had such a big on-line following for the same reason Battletech has its following. It Is Cool!
