Actually brought this up in a match against Founders, and they seemed to not know either.

Are LRMs fire and forget (once you get a lock) or do you need to stay locked to hit?

Thanks in advance!

You need to maintain the lock until they hit.

Edit: If you don't they go to the last spot they had a lock.

you need to maintain the lock for the missile to continue to track to the target.

If you lose the lock, the missiles will fly to the last known location, and will still deal damage and may still kill a mech, but are no longer tracking to the target.

Yep. If your target doesn't move between when you lost lock and impact, you'll hit- otherwise, the missiles hit whatever spot they lost tracking at.

Note that if you fire with a lock, lose that lock, and re-establish it before the missiles hit something, they will once again begin tracking it.

You don't have to retain the lock, some else on you team can retain the target for you. TAG, and NARC will also retain a target for your team.

Incorrect. Other people can get line of sight for you, but you must maintain lock-on to keep missiles tracking. TAG and NARC also do not retain a target at this time, they merely speed lock-on acquisition and focus LRM salvos into a smaller area.

Don't think that's right. I've seen missiles do 90 degree turns midair and go straight to a target I lit up with TAG, long after my ally had switched targets.

Incorrect. The shooter MUST maintain the lock on the target if they want the LRMs to track the target.

probably what happened is that you (the one with tag) re-established the target, the person firing was able to regain lock on that target, which allowed the missiles to correct themselves.

I must say though as a dedicated lrm boat, the reconnecting with a lost target doesn't always seem to correct the "lost" missiles. I've seen many a volleys just go right by a mech after i've regained a lost target.

Well slater there is always a chance that the LRMS will just miss and not score a single hit but its rare unless the target has AMS.

You can even dumbfire them. Put your crosshairs where you want them to go. Of course, if your target moves in the many seconds they travel, you'll miss. It's nice to shoot at a Gaussapult sitting on a hill wich you don't have a lock for because of range. Usually gets them to move into cover :)

You dont have to keep it locked the whole time, you can re-lock the same target you fired on and they'll hit.

but yeah, without lock they go to the last know location of the target.
