I've been excited for another mechwarrior game and I just found out today that MWO went open beta. I got the client and let it download while I was replacing tensioner pulley on my car. After I got cleaned up, I played about 3 maybe 4 hours of MWO.

I'll be honest, I'm dissapointed. This game is just underwhelming, it just doesn't hold my attention or make me want to play daily becuase it so lackluster.

Everything is just bland and boring.
It's team-deathmatch with an optional "cap the base to win."
The matches are too short.
The maps, well.. I can't tell if they are big or not, since we are pretty close to the opposing team, and you don't explore the map or use it to your advantage or have to hunt for them. Not to mention the maps just suck, too much climbing, the only two maps I like was the city map and the wasteland map you know the one with barely any trees on it.
The hud is just blah, would have like to see the use of the mech's cockpit console displaying the information, one for damage and one for weapons, and only have the hud for targeting, way points and markers.
Speaking of which, cockpit just seems like an overlay. It's there but no point since it doesn't offer anything except as visual and it doesn't even give you the sensation that you're in a mech.

The enviroment is not destructible, meaning no ability to create obstructions, create choke points, set up ambushes or simply downing mechs.
Gravity and collisions are unrealistic. I mean come on! 50, 65 or 80 ton mech climbing a hill or mountain with mechinical footing without sliding down due to gravity, or sinking into mud or snow, or on man-made structures which are obviously not design for supporting such weight. Colliding with other mechs or objects and doesn't do damage?

There's no point to the game except to destroy each other, which could be fun if there were more mechs and I mean like 32v32 and were able to respawn or go by waves. I mean the way it's set-up now, you join, 8v8, you play for 5 minutes and you're done, back to MWO home screen, do it again. After doing it for 50 times, it just gets boring and for what? To unlock more mechs to play on the same 4 maps?

The fact the game touts about teamwork doesn't have any team based game-types, like capture and hold, capture the flag, capture and destroy, ticket based cap points similar to battlefield or day of defeat, or defending a base or city or something.

The reward system and economy seems counter-intuitve. Play the game, don't get kills/assist or do damage, you get CB anyways. Win or lose, CB for you! Leave the game, CB for you too. Sucide, WHAT!? Are you kidding me? We're rewarding the cowards too. What is this? Obama's "let's redistribute the C-BIll so it's fair for everyone" plan?
I mean what the hell? All I have to do is get in a match and I'm guaranteed some sort of C-bill reward.

The mech lab? All the mechs come premade. I rather see the ability to buy the chassis, weapons, armor, engine upgrades and heatsinks and whatever else separately, just as long the specifications of the mech allows it. I mean common sense, since that would force the player to either grind for c-bills or buy whatever he needs with mech credits.

The pilot lab?.. what is this? anarchy online? we're going to put implants in our pilots now?...
Frankly I don't know what to make of it, since I didn't progress far to actually utilize it.

The graphics are decent, it got bugs, it's a beta, a beta is for squashing bugs and tweaking the numbers for balance. I don't really have an issue here.
The demand for graphics has pretty much ruin the gameplay for most modern games coming out today. It's the reason for lack of content since most if not half of developer's time is spent on the graphics portion of the game. I'm tired of hearing people saying a game sucks because it's graphics are not good. The game only sucks if it's game play or plot or multiplayer and so on sucks all together.

Matchingmaking... meh, Personally I still prefer a server browser. I think if it's made like tribes ascend like menu options or something like Battlefield 3 using check boxes as filters, then you could have multiple game-types and multiple maps and hell multiple server size.

There is one thing that I don't like and that's the annoying humming or buzzing sound that makes up for in-game music or ambient cockpit sound or whatever, I had to turn that off. I rather hear the engine, the movement, the mechincal noise of my mech and 60 alarms going off.

That reminds me, I want more realistic damage. I want to be warn about hydraulic failures, engine damage or engine cooling system failure, electrical failures, just stuff like that to get more immersion in the game to actually get the sensation I'm in the mech taking alot of damage. Slower maneuverability because of massive damage to leg or legs or slow torso or slow reloading due to malfunctioning loader. I mean the potentinal is there.

One more thing, this thing needs a tutorial or practice mode or newbie servers for new players that have never play a mech game or have but have forgotten the key binds or how to operate one, which was my case, I played mechwarrior 3 and 4.

As for everything else, I like the weapons, I like the damage it does. I like the mechs but hate that you are forced to buy a premade one and having to customize it to your liking later. I like the fact that you need other mechs to take down an assault or heavy mech and the need for light mechs for scouting, diversion or kiting. But that's about it.

The game is just not very good and I don't see it getting people to play or pay for a matter of fact. It's just lacking and underwhelming.

It needs to go back in the oven and cook some more.

That's my opinion/feedback/point of view from a casual player.

inb4 golden goggles

you've summed it up right, for a mech 'sim' it's certainly lacking many cues that come with being a sim.
