My three favorite mechs of all time were the Timber Wolf, Uziel, and Stormcrow II (from MW4, called the Ryoken II there). All of them were chicken walkers. Hence, I am a huge fan of chicken walking.

Which makes me sad that we don't have that many chicken walkers in the game yet -_-. Sadly, it looks like the Uziel isn't around yet, so that's a no go. The cougar was definitely fun, hopefully it gets introduced.

EDIT: Ok, Adder. I'm down with that. Also, the Marauder would be totally kick-a. Completely. And utterly.

It depends. I think the Catapult looks great with reverse knees, while the Cataphract looks akward. That works the other way as well, the Jenner looks goofy with its forward knees.

OK, let's do a little census of my favourite 'mechs:
* Battlemaster: Humanoid
* Thunderbolt: Humanoid.
* Crusader: Humanoid.
* Warhammer: Humanoid.
* Phoenix Hawk: Humanoid.
* Griffin: Humanoid.
* Shadow Hawk: Humanoid
* Wasp: Humanoid:
* Stinger: Humanoid.
* Locust: Chicken-legged.

I guess Humanoid wins 9-1.

Let's talk current MWO mechs instead:
* Commando: Humanoid.
* Centurion: Humanoid.

Huh. Humanoid won 2-0.

I guess it's fair to say I'm not a fan of chicken-walkers -_-

While my preference has always been the rearjoint style, there are right and wrong ways to go about doing it (Such as combining the two). The Nova cat, for example, uses forejoint knees with rearjoint subknees - a design flounder by any practical means since the legs are clearly designed for speed while the chassis isnt known for it and increases the vulnerability of the legs. The Uziel is a good example of how to pull off a double joint design.

On the other hand, the torso makes the whole mech - You can have decent legs but if your torso looks like the Frankenstein monster reject (Locust, Cicada) then what style it uses doesnt really matter. The primary reason the Timberwolf is a widely known and loved design is it combines a pair of sexy-looking rearjoint legs with an imposing torso, much like the Mad Dog. The Hellbringer looks infinitely better than the Summoner because of symmetry but is also what makes the Summoner unique. Case in point, you need the torso to fit the legs. Like a good woman, really.

Needs another option, digitigrade, e.g. Thanatos. They are pretty cool.

Humanoid and must have hands. As a merc sometimes you have to help rebuilding city walls or save a princess ;-)

i love the catapult partly because of its chicken legs. The way it lift's up it's leg is so goofy and cute. adds to it's character.

Generally I like the reverse-jointed mechs more. Like someone else mentioned, I appreciate the non-humanoid, more alien looking designs on an aesthetic level.

I tend to prefer reverse joint mechs, but I would totally use a three or four legged mech if they ever release one. Just for the novelty.

I'm definitely in the camp that prefers reverse jointed Mechs. I think it helps that most of those have the major axis of the torso aligned front to back, instead of up-down, like on the more humanoid Mechs. To me, that really reinforces the ‘walking tank’ feeling, and the relatively smaller profile seems sensible to me as well. Also, it doesn't hurt that a Mech like the Stalker really looks like a hungry T-Rex about to eat you when it's making its way straight towards you, even without the special paint job...

Leg design isn't that much of a factor to me, but the number of legs must be even.

I'm on the opposite side here hah. Chickenlegs, and no hands please. It's a warmachine not a craftsman =) Even arms are uneccesary.

...and yeah, I run Catapults, Cicadas and Stalkers =)

Give us hope for the Goliath guys, done right - this sort of "neet-o" mech would be super fun.
