Problem is that the mauler is too slow and too big a target. Those AC/20's will be out for anyone that wants to kill anything.

Same could be said for any other mech, mate. Though I do agree, especially since those gigantic missile launchers are part of the side torso, literally meaning anyone that wanted to could use either a Gauss or ERPPC and blow that torso of from about 800 meters away.

OK. I'm going to talk about something that's not in the game yet, but I really hope will be. The Mauler is an assault mech that can mount dual AC/20s, not to mention various missile and energy weapons. Would this mech be overpowered? Would it always be a priority target? What do you think?

It wouldn't be that tough. The stock Mauler would carry 4 AC/2, 2 LRM15, and 2 ERLL. To do this it uses a small XL engine and has a low speed. Since it has a bigger torso silhouette than the Awesome and moves so slow, it'll be pretty easy to take out. The dual AC/20s won't fit in the side torsos with the XL engine and since there is no mechanic in the Mechlab for splitting large weapons between an arm and the torso, anyone sporting dual AC/20s will also have a very heavy standard engine or no speed at all. The 4 AC/2 or (possibly) 4 AC/5 versions will be the real beast.

Well. They have this thing in the game called cover. You may have heard of it. Very effective at long range.

Yea, All the cover in 3/4 of the maps we have. It's not like all the maps we currently have are plagued with gigantic open sightlines or anything. I could always put a gauss on a Raven and out maneuver your Mauler all day.

Lets agree to disagree.

I would love to see this mech in the game. One of my favorites.

I have always loved the Mauler. The MC version was the best with clan wpns, 2x cGauss, 2x cLBX5, 2x cERLLs, 4x cLRMs...mmmmm, hold on while I get a towel...

Agreed, and easily made. Equally deadly might be a 2x LBX/10, 2x AC/2 combo. The 4x Gauss on the otherhand is impossible.

Well, from what I recall (and I would like the Mauler as well), there's only one variant at this point in time, with another due out next "year." The 3R isn't due out for another ten...
So unless PGI REALLY bends canon, that's going to be a very hard assault tree to fill out.
Which is a shame-save for the fAtlas, the Mauler was one of my fav assaults.

Save for the Blood Asp with 4 light gauss on it. Anyone recall the Quad Panzer? :)

Nobody will use the 20s , and they'll be replaced with gauss. e.g. Balance

Apparently you have not actually used a dual AC/20 Catapult before. Mine has 2 Med Lasers and 2 AC/20's. I consistantly kill anything below assault class with 1 to 2 alpha strikes. They are deadly beyond compare in the hands of a capable pilot.

I love the Mauler, it is a favorite of mine, but I am pretty sure that this 'Mech will not see it's way into this game for some time. It does not possess enough variants of this current timeline to make it viable. The most likely choice for the next assault class 'Mech will be the Banshee. It is noted as the most common assault 'Mech in the Inner Sphere, it has numerous variants and it fills in the missing 95 ton weight slot.

Mauler with 2x AC 20s would be a lot of fun.

i too would like to see the king crab but the Mauler would still have one advantage over even the power of the King Crab

the mauler's ballistic hardpoints are in the torsos, not the arms. it would be like a K2 on steroids

most of you have seen the awesome effectiveness of the 4xac/2 or 4xac/5 cataphracts. the stock mauler configuration boasts 4 ac/2s and since they are all located in the torso they are inherently much more accurate than on the 'phract. add in the extra armor and you have quite a monster.

i would love to see the mauler in the game!
