Past 60 FPS, most people won't notice the difference so why stress the graphic card more than necessary?

Past 60 FPS on a 60Hz nobody could notice the difference.

Having a 120Hz monitor, it's one of those things that just makes everything feel smoother. It's not hugely noticeable but when I use a monitor at around 70Hz or less or my refresh rate reverts I definitely notice even if it takes a while.

how necessary are semicolons for starting a new line in the .cfg? is it optional or important for all or some commands?

Not needed at all!

The semicolons mark a line without function, for notes and explanations.
If you want a line to be executed, don't put a semicolon in front.

Is this "user.cfg" file the same as the "systemoverride.cfg" file?

It has these exact lines in it right now for me, and I haven't edited them yet.

; DO NOT MODIFY THIS FILE!
r_Driver="DX9"
r_txaa=0
r_msaa=0
r_postaa=0

Do I just insert the film grain, glass, and other settings into here??? It does say DO NOT MODIFY. So please, I need reassurance. Because I don't know how to make a cfg file without making it in the .txt format.

**EDIT: also, when I try to save these r_, and gp_functions in systemoveride.cfg, my computer always gives me the "Access Denied" Pop-up window. Where's this user.cfg file???

user.cfg is NOT systemoverride.cfg.

If you do not have a user.cfg file, just use notepad to create a new file. To eliminate the .txt, change folder settings to view file extensions then modify the file name by deleting the .txt

Since last patch (not today's small fix) my user.cfg became unresponsive.

I had only these options in user.cfg

gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0
r_DepthOfField=0
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0
cl_fov=79

Since the patch my FoV is back to default but cockpit glass and grain amount is disabled even if I remove the user.cfg. I m not sure about depth of field.

So it seems as if the options of user.cfg became the default options, except from FoV which reverted to default, and now I cannot alter them...

Any help is really welcome! Especially if an admin looks into it and can give me a tip.

Alright, I did as you said. But just checking the file extensions list did nothing; All that was listed for me was ".txt" and "ALL FILES".
I'm not sure how exactly you wanted me to put in the .cfg syntax, but I just had to create the file outside the MWO directory so I could save it without admin rights, rename it user.cfg, and move it into PiranhaGames/MWO/. It worked. The file shows as 'user' with 'CFG FILE' under the type column. Thank you.

And Meltegez, I don't know how I can help, but suggest to wait for the next patch notes to address this. Are you having the same admin privilege/ acces denied issues I had? Maybe replace the file. But I don't know, I just got back to my thread here and quickly got my first user.cfg up. So I'd weary to take any advice I have, sorry.

Google is your friend :)

http://windows.micro...sions=windows-7

Once done, you should see either user.cfg.txt or user.txt depending on how you named the file. Rename the file, delete the .txt and either leave .cfg or insert .cfg.

Hope that helps

I'm not entirely sure what the point of the quote and link was for, it essentially supports everything I said while limiting the discussion to the realm of 60fps. But you don't really provide any context for the quote or link.

The fact is though, that a 60Hz monitor cannot physically represent frames beyond 60fps. I'm assuming you took the point that nobody could notice the difference but I never inferred with capable hardware you couldnt, a 120Hz monitor at 120fps is definitely noticeable.

I have the exact same problem, except that it didn't work before either :-) After 2 years of not playing mwo i did a completely fresh install of the game. There was no user.cfg initially, so i created one in the install folder. Just to make sure we are talking bout the right folder: In my insall folder there are 2 other files (system.cfg and build_info.xml) and folders like bin32, bin64, Engine etc.

No matter what i write in my user.cfg it doesn't do anything at all. I have no clue what i am doing wrong. So is there someone who can give me a hint?

I just have these lines in it:

cl_fov=79
gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0
r_DepthOfField=0
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0

This won't work anymore:

r_DepthOfField=0
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0

This will:

cl_fov=79
gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0

I also have this in my user.cfg:

gp_default_cockpit_light = 0
gp_mech_showfps = 1

If you want to actually disable cockpit light, set this to 1. It is the number of keypresses for the cockpit light toggle, not the setting itself. Yes, I know, very intuitive.

Wrong!
0 = disable
1 = low light

Except when you try the cockpit light setting, using 0 does nothing. Seriously, actually try it instead of posting patch notes that do not explain how it actually works.

Since the file reconstruction, I believe you need to have your user.cfg in

Users/(Admin)/Saved Games/Mechwarrior Online/

To actually work.

Mine is still in the MWO installation folder, and I would definitely notice FoV or cockpit glass reverting.

This is so ******* frustrating. Where your config files go and what they do should be explained in detail in ******* patch notes. **** you, PGI.

I simply have my User.cfg in both locations to insure it works, and it does.

Ok i'm i bit confused now....as i mentioned before i thought my user.cfg is not recognized properly. I came to this conclusion when i changed cl_fov to 50 just to check if there is some difference. And there was not! Everything looks the same, no matter if i use a value of 50 or 79 or something else....

Also i thought gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0 removes the complete cockpit frames including glass. Ok i think the "glass" is removed, but the frames are still there. Is that behavior correct?
So at least cl_fov seems to have no effect on my side, so that i thought the user.cfg isn't executed by the game.

After adding gp_mech_showfps = 1 to the same config i have my fps showing up in the top left corner so it actually DOES execute my user.cfg.
So just to make sure...is cl_fov and gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass still working or is there something i am missing?

The field of view has a limited range. I believe 50 is to low and is not an acceptable value (someone please correct me here if I am wrong).

Yes, that is correct. You are not supposed to be able to completly disable the cockpit frame as such. Only the glass effect.
