I'm new to the Battletech franchise and I've been wondering about the lore, or more specifically; how mechs became the backbone of the armies of the BT universe.

Is there some sort of web page that explains it all?

Basically, the leading house needed some kind of advantage over the others to get to power. What they did is build a Mackie, the first assault mech and after field tests, where it completely decimated a small army of conventional vehicles on it's own they've found that advantage they needed.
