Do you really enjoy running just optimized builds?

Yeah, they're incredibly min/max. Don't you have any fun playing derpy builds? Trying out sub optimal builds to learn new weapons? Push yourself to learn ballistic leading? Anything?
Were you the folks who looked up the best guns in MW3 and never use anything but those?
I mean, really, half the fun of this game is derping around in mechlab. Exactly half, since this game only includes two functions: shooting things and building things.

The 6xML JR7-F is just as fun for a different reason - It's totally worthless as a duelist, but hilarious as a "chase the Commando, wait for him to pause briefly and kill him with 1 rear torso Alpha" or a "Stand behind the Awesome and kill it in two Alphas then sleep for a little bit" 'mech.
I have also taken my well balanced Jenner to a fight with my friend in a 6x Flamer JR7-F. I blasted the rear armour off an Atlas and told him to get stuck in. Atlas killed by Flamers, the weakest and most useless weapon in the game - Where is your God now?

However - I see moe an issue that there are such clear optimal configs anyway. At least if they are overused the Devs might see the stats and realise they are not maknig a balanced game?

I usually run the best builds I can, with experimentation every so often to try to make new things or make old builds better, but every so often our outfit runs an intoxiop.
I'm a little hazy on the details, but after one of those I woke up the next morning and I found a couple new 'mechs in my mechbay.
One was a Jenner with an LRM 5, large laser, medium laser, small laser, and a flamer, and there may have been an SRM in there too.
The other was a naked commando with 3 LRM 10s.
Both had Standard 100 engines.
And I still got kills with 'em.

In the end, play what makes you happy, man. Why worry what other people run?

But while I like diversity and trying to make different concept work in the mechlab, I expect the final result to be in competitive range to other top builds or I will not use it for a long time.
Maybe once I have all the money, exp and Mechs I want, I'll mess aound with some troll or fun builds, but as long as my farming goals are not reached yet I will only run competitive designs.

flamers didn't kill the atlas you did, in your cheap lagshield lightmech. Which is the reason I run a streakcat in the first place. I enjoy it so much when I blow little buggers like you away.

I have not had a Hunchback P with small lasers for at least 3 patch's now. Awesome Med laser boat for 2.
I have yet to build a streak cat, although I'm thinking about it. If I do chances are it will be mostly SRM's and not streaks.
The builds I want to run are the large energy builds, I was a huge ppc fan, and we all know how good they are.
PS I'm one of those few who have been having fun playing with 3 large lasers on the K2 and having a ball. Just to see the look on people's faces, not Gauss, not PPC, whats he doing (as his head melts)

I have a Raven with large and small laser as well as a tag oh and LRM5.
I also had a Raven with LRM15 and small laser along with a Tag and 900 rounds for the LRM. Was pretty funny looking.

Losing is not, why do it if you have a choice...

For the most part, I utilize only a 'optimized' weapons loadout, yes, but I pilot a Centurion, which, most people will agree, isn't necessarily the best Medium out there; I don't see why you shouldn't be able to find a balance between effectiveness and enjoyment.
What I don't and won't do, however, is willingly pilot a 'bad' build - that would just harm me and my squadmates.

win and get more cbills and for some of the Odds here " experience"
lose and you get a repair bill which may not be covered by your payout and might prevent you from playing further ?
i honestly do not see any upside in losing except to suicide farm. Fun? what fun is there in getting rolled?

Honestly, at first (I've been in closed beta for months too), I thought I wanted this biggest gun and as many of those as possible. However, after dozens of matches and trying out a bunch of everything (mechs and weapons), it turns out I'm best with a good mixture of all 3 (energy, ballistic, missile) in a mech I never thought I'd enjoy (Atlas). With the setup I have I get at least 1 to 3 kills every match (never less than 1!). I was surprised by what I found out about my playstyle once I started mixing the weapon setup a bit.
Also, the mech you choose means a lot, especially the hardpoints. Some people like firing from the arm, some from the torso, some like shooting from high altitude, some from low altitude, etc. That's one nice thing about Mechwarrior, there's a good fit for everybody.

Unless you spend real cash, derping around in mechlab requires you to farm first, and any failed experiment is too costly in either time or actual money. Totally kills the fun of it for me.
