So.. we've been playing for like a week now in open beta and people are starting to max out mechs in terms of the pilot lab skills.

In another game I shall not name here, once you max out the tech tree for a vehicle, you attain elite status and can choose to direct the XP towards improving your crew.. (and that can eat up a substantial amount of XP.. more than I've ever made on any vehicle in that game)

In MWO, we are the crew and quite frankly.. we can't just magically infuse that XP into our brains to make us better, so it will start piling up doing us no good unless we spend MC to convert it to GXP.

All fine, one would say.. but arguably at 25GXP for 1 MC.. that conversion is at a premium (as it should be), so not everyone can afford it and not everyone would want to waste money on it.

So why not just add a toggle for mechs that have been maxed out, so that instead of gaining further mech XP, we get none of that, but an increased portion of GXP.. say an extra 2.5% to 5%. This way, running a maxed out mech would not feel as wasteful as it is right now.

I agree, and playing with my atlases right now feel a bit wasteful. Its fun and all but you know...
You should be able to choose to gain XP if you want it to convert, but I think many players (myself included) wants to play with the mech he is about to max out. I am willing to buy the slots and such, but I am here to play on the first place, making shortcuts with XP converting just isn't the way.
So the other option of the choice would be maybe increased GXP as Csebal said, OR since you are a master pilot of the given mech, the contractors willing to pay additional reward for you blablabla... so in addition to premium, founder/hero you may get +5-10% CB at the end of the match.

I think another alternative might be for there to be 'upgrades', like Ferro Fibrous and all, for XP, that cost no matter what you're switching to.

EG: Maybe a CDA has a speed boost, a (small) armor buff, and a fire rate boost. You can only have one, and each one costs like 5000 xp. Each time you switch, it costs?

Something to turn XP into a mech-specific currency, instead of a straight unlock tree.

That CB bonus thing could work as well. In a sense it is better as it would not be competing with the pay to convert XP mechanic that's in place right now, it would however change the nature of rewards from XP to money, which I consider the flaw of the idea.

Personally I would prefer an increased GXP rewards myself, but could settle for extra cbills as well. The point being that the XP should not be just piling up on the mech.

Couldn't agree more.

Just as an aside to this, I'd like to see some sort of cosmetic reward for getting three variants to Master, such as a special skin usable on that mech.

There might be ways to integrate the system within community warfare, although it's hard to guess at this point as we don't know what final form CW is going to take, but things such as getting to master on a mech gives you increased reputation gains with your House while piloting it, or getting 3 variants of a light mech to master might make you eligible to apply to join the Davion Light Guards or something.

I say, add a unique skin that can be earned for each variant you own. You have to re-earn it for each mech you buy, that way your mech xp is going somewhere. You can use any mech xp from any other mech of the same chassis for purchasing the skins.

As is, they already have a way to convert from Mech XP to GXP, it just costs money. I'm pretty sure it's there for the purpose the OP described. I'm pretty sure they want to keep that so they can make the moneys.

I think i need to rephrase my feelings.
While you gaining XP on a mech aside from CBills you have the feeling of advancement on metagaming level. After you reached the master and bought the +1 module, the robot lacks of that feeling until you spend MC.
So its part of the fun while "leveling" a mech, and you have the feeling of progression, but once you are at "max level" there is no metagame reward for you. You gain GXP and CB just like EVERY other mechs. But you don't have that little sensation anymore when you can buy/unlock someting new.

You know that other game... with tanks and ****... There are some bonuses when you maxed out a tank, (especially for crew training so they are still good on metagame level beyond making money). Thats why I would like to have some option, maybe additional 1-5% GXP, or CB. In that way with every level of your mechs you would have some benefit. (without the feeling of to gain advantage you _must_ pay MC)
So converting XP should be an Option and not the only way to gain further advantage of master level mechs.
