TF2 makes a butt load off of cosmetic items and items that anyone can get but can pay to get quicker. While TF2 wasn't originally a F2P and built up it's fanbase first, Battletech has a fairly large pre-existing fanbase already. Just because it's pro-consumerist doesn't mean they won't make any money.

Yeah, but by the time TF2 went F2P the development costs had likely been more than paid for and they felt that going F2P with a store was probably the best way to keep the income rolling in. Not only that, but there's essentially no infrastructure that Valve needs to maintain to keep the game going. I could host a TF2 server in my home if I felt like it.

MWO is going to require constant infrastructure maintenance, storyline inputs, and new developments to keep everything up and running. That takes a lot more money and people than is required to keep a very simple first person shooter that people are generally happy with without new maps or character types.

As much as this conversation is interesting, and I see your point MWO is pretty ambitious isn't it? I can't wait to see how it turns out. But, this thread needs moar Quad loving.

I <3 Quads

We got official word form the devs on the tweet chat:

Quote

Q: The quadrupeds, and so-called “unsee” will be part of the game at some point?
A: Quads are not planned for launch. We may review them post launch. They pose some technical challenges. Posted Image (Bryan)

That wasnt unexpected, still sounds sort of positive that we may get them post launch
This thread is like a zombie

I wouldn't mind piloting a quad design. Both the scorpion and tarantula are excellent designs, the goliath not so much.

go hit up armored core 5, its got biped triped quads treads hovers, you name it.

mechwarriors pilot bipeds exclusively.

I know a few Scorpion pilots that would take exception to that statement

Hon. Mechwarriors;

Quad designs are effective, the more so because of the unfamiliarity of most pilots with thier weaknesses. One Quad mech model in the medium range would not be asking too much once MWO hits its stride as WOW did. I for one hope that MWO incorporates multiple depth water terrain, which is where quads shine brightest. Makeing effective use of that mech eating lake or sea shore would make for some great amphibious assault scenarios.

Yeah, i heard that Quads with heatsinks on all 4 legs get a much larger bonus to heat efficiency while in water than Bipeds, if someone's good with TT would be nice if they could either prove me right, or prove me wrong

Quads would be nice to see once melee combat is done - not needing a skill check when kicking makes them much more fun. But first get the basics and normal stuff going.

Well, they could have 8 heat sinks in the water instead of 4. I wouldn't think they got any special bonus above that. Even so, according to my Master Rules, which might be a little dated, a Mech can only shed an extra 6 heat with underwater heat sinks, which admittedly is greater than the maximum of 4 that a bipedal mech could achieve in depth 1 water, but is a bit lower than the 8 a quad could otherwise achieve.

I support them adding anything that fits BT lore and is in the timeline they've got set. Including quads. Think both the current quads are unseen though sadly, if we're lucky they'll do unseen with redesigns to make them usable in MWO for quad and bipeds, but I won't hold my breath on that one.

I dont think I'd drive a quad or a hexi-mech* either its not because I dont like the designs, some of them are actually cool looking and yet others like the Sirrocco (AT-AT plagarism) are terrible. In the end, for the sort of combat I engage in, not having arms would be a detriment, it's kind of hard to punch the cockpit off a clan mech without fists or for that matter flip the bird to taunt the enemy.

*look up the Bishamon...I think thats it's name Draconis Combine six-legged mech.

Considering the design for the Xanthos is "extinct" at the time I didn't really think of that one. Maybe in 21+ years in the 3070s we'll see it when it shows back up again?

I love quads. You can leg them exactly four times.
