Was just wondering if the missiles in the launcher could get blown up with a well placed shot if the doors are open?

I seem to have missed where it was explained what the purpose of manual missle door operation was.

I was figuring it was just a cool simulation, cosmetic feature.

However, is it having an actual gameplay function? Does it increase fire rate?

Doors open = faster firing rate, less protection for that location

Doors closed = slower/delayed firing, more protection for that location when shut.

I'll have to look up the patch notes for more specific details, it was mentioned maybe a month or two ago.

EDIT: Okay, I can't find on these forums where they store old patch notes, but from the Aug 28th patch:

Quote

GAMEPLAY
  • Closed weapon bay doors on Catapult and Centurion provide a 10% damage resistance for that component.

I think that there's a firing delay if you keep the doors closed - they have to open before the missiles can launch. If you keep them open, of course, the missiles can just blast straight out.

When closed they also give a 10% damage reduction to that location.
Assuming that is something they kept.

I haven't noticed a negative to having them open. At least not on my Centurion. There isn't really a point on keeping them open on any Catapult unless you want to use Artemis enhanced SRMS. My Centurion-D Uses two Artemis SRM6 racks. Keeping the doors open means I have zero firing delay on them. When I'm not in a good position to shoot them I do close them however. I believe the last time the devs explained the function of the doors was a 10% reduction on damage to the missile launchers themselves which means pretty much nothing since by the time your armor is removed and they can be damaged you can expect to lose those weapons anyway.

The missile doors are one of the great design wrinkles that PGI has tossed in as a nod to simulators, they look wonderful and when closed they provide a 10% armor bonus to that appendage, I believe. They were annoying when SRMing because of the totally brutal firing delay, but with this manual control they are fully implemented (to my mind) and shouldn't get in the way. Good job guys, can't wait to try SRMs again!

As has been pointed out you get 10% damage reduction on the launcher while that door is flipped down. I think it only applies it the door is hit.

So, it's worth keeping it down while you don't need it.

Besides the stuff mentioned above it's also awesome for insulting clan mates in morse when waiting for targets.

It has been confirmed that with the doors closed, the first missile to be fired will suffer a very small delay whilst the doors open. If you know your going to be firing shortly, you can manually open the doors so as to eliminate that delay. After a time without firing they will automatically close.

As for increased damage with open doors, there has yet to be a confirmation.

That's a remarkably specific application. I'm impressed so many of your clan-mates know morse code! I wonder if you could do the same in semaphore..?

Good to keep open for SRMs. Not necessary to keep open for LRMs and streaks.

They don't. They just sometimes wonder why I start snikering in TS when I "wave" at them.
Yes, I'm silly like that.

Whatever it does to protect the launchers, it certainly looks very cool indeed. When you are looking at a Catapult, nose-on in the distance and those doors go up... shudder

Those doors going up should be a cue to direct-fire nuke the arms as they're 10% weaker when they're open.

Nice I didnt know about the 10% increase with the doors closed. I've been runnin around with them open in my Centurion. I only asked cause I have died with my torso housing the launcher being destroyed but I run a standard engine. I was thinkin maybe the ready to fire missiles got hit and exploded

If they implemented that, they certainly didn't put it in the patch notes.

And months later... how do you know if they are open or closed at a specific moment?

Never mind. Found a clue
"The indicator light is on one of the struts that are supporting the cockpit canopy."
