The 6 smllas Jenner F has been consistently powerful for months now, suffice to say it's here to stay.
Heck, with Dubs you can even pull off 4 x medlas 2 x smllas or even 6x medlas if you don't mind riding a walking toaster.
smllas allows you to alpha strike forever constantly and never overheat, but more meds give you a bigger alpha bite.

I may not survive the match. I may not even break 200 damage... or do much of anything offensively, but with the Jenner, if I just survive for a good 2-3 minutes in the opposing team's defensive area I'm going to come out of the game with a healthy profit and more than likely a win. And if you have 2 or 3 other light mechs with you doing the same thing? Forget about it... Game over.

The Jenner D with 245xl, 4xMlas and 2xSSRM2, AMS, Endo and DHS is pretty good as well.

but with a XL 300, a 6 sllas jenner can easily get within range to use it's lasers.
Honestly though, I prefer MLs to SLs myself too, will probably try a similar build once I buy a Jenner F, I just realize 6x sl is probably gonna be better, I don't care if my builds are not optimal however. Optimal is boring.

You mean Jenner F w XL300 and 6 Medium Lasers...right?
Expensive as hell to run I admit. You need DHS, Endo, and Ferro to make it work. You should be able to hit around 200pt's Armour(Don't have Mechlab in front of me). There's some heat management involved, you can Alpha a few times before overheat, I have 2 groups of 3MLAS set-up for cooling-down.
It's fun to be able to slap someone for appreciable damage without having to kiss them. You can pretty much 2 shot ears off Cata's which is just fantastic, same with Dragon and Centurion Arms.

Lots of mech builds. You'll need some basic intelligence and experience with builds to be able to sort the obvious bad builds from the good ones though.

Try different mechs, experiment with load outs and discover what play style or class that suits you best.

Saw a Jenner variant with 2x Pulse ML, and 2x SL win the game for us. He got 4, 5 kills, over a 1000 points of damage. Dude knew his business.
The best variant I've been able to come up with so far is a fast Commando - 180 standard, 3x ML, SSRM. Its good because its quick and small - so as a scout, harrasser, and squirrel its pretty decent, and 116kph means its a good interceptor for other lights. Lately, though, I've been dying more often than not, so I'm thinking of investigating the Cicada for a similar role.

The simple truth is that you can succeed with most mechs. It all depends on:
- your play style and how well you can adapt your tactics to your mech and loadout. If you want to wade into firefights, don't buy a Jenner. You want to fly around the map, changing your position, and not wanting to be patient, don't buy an Atlas.
- Which leads to: Don't force your mech/build into tactics it can not execute. Yea, sometimes, things get out of hand and you get stuck. Then you just have to do your best. But I have witnessed a LOT of new players (since Open Beta) actively pushing their mechs into rolls that they are not suited to. Just because your new Hunchback has an AC/20 doesn't mean you can walk up to an Atlas battle line and join in. Your catapult may have those nasty Gauss Rifles... but good players are going to burn/blast through your exposed cockpit as soon as you give them a good, close shot. And worst of all! Don't get it into your head that just because you are in an Atlas you are a god of battle that can do whatever he wishes. You are powerful. You are also the biggest prize/target on the field.
- Who are you playing with!!!! Or, more to the point, are you playing with a group. On Teamspeak? I don't care what mech you are using; being with a organized or even semi-organized group is THE single force multiplier that effects rounds more than any other factor. If you are dropping lone wolf (which I do when my group is not around) stick with the group.... even if they are morons and doing something dumb. Your chances are better helping the group do something dumb, than you all by yourself doing something smart.
- Know your own skills. If you are not a great shot, don't invest in those ER Large Lasers; the extra range (and heat) is wasted on you. If your situational awareness is not the best, you will struggle in that fast light. If you are just plain stupid... well, can't fix stupid.
Take me. I'm a good shot. I can pick parts and remove them. I can use that ER Large Laser and keep the beam on a Catapults cockpit or a Dragon's arm for most of the beam duration. Even moving. One of my lance-mates, not so much. He prefers his medium pulse lasers on a lighter, faster chassis. Over all, we both do very well, with similar K/D ratios and all playing to our skills.
And don't shy away from a weapon based on the "common sense". Most will say that the PPC and ERPPC are useless. I completely disagree. Back before the wipe, I was running a 4 PPC awesome and I was a surgeon with those bolts. My style is to be patient and to pick and place my shots carefully. I'm not holding down the trigger and spraying. I'll wait a few seconds, letting the enemy spray some shots across my armor, then put in one big strike where it counts. PPCs are devastating weapons in that role.
You'll note I talked about tactics and not much on weapons. That's the point. Play the trial mechs, practice managing your heat on those "Hot" mechs (that skill will serve you well!). Find the style that is fun for you. Then build a mech that suits it.
If you just build based on what others like and win with, you may end up being very frustrated and disappointed.
