I have such nostalgia from playing MWO, combined with my experiance as a miniatures TT player (formally Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, and still playing Flames of War), makes me want to break into battletech.
I have no idea where to start. Frist, I do NOT want the box set for noobic-hairs. I've played enough mini games, I'd rather know what books to get to get me start...and importantly, what to start building and buying for my force!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like I want to get Classic Battletech: Total Warfare and Techmanual as well would be the books I want get.
I will probably roll Innersphere, I love catapults, hunchbacks, Maulers, and Jagermechs.
From there, I'm lost...

Yes, Total Warfare and Techmanual are great starting points. Also go get Solaris Skunk Werks, great 'Mech design program. Next for maps you can either create your own miniatures scale maps, or buy the preprinted hex maps, your choice (oddly enough I prefer the hex maps, and have created my own 3D hex terrain maps http://mwomercs.com/...1951#entry61951 ) Also minis are available from ironwind metals. and finally find friends and enjoy!

Total warfare is a must have. You can get the pdf for around 20 on CGL's site. Tactical operations has advanced rules so thats a good buy too. Strategic ops isn't as necessary as its mostly rules for aerospace and large scale operations. The tech manual is also good to have if you are going to be building custom units but thats all thats in there. Like he said you can use Solaris skunkwerks for all your building and you'll just need the tech manual to look up stats and item rules.
If your gonna roll IS I would not rule out the box set. It has 26 plastic mechs of all the mainstay IS units plus the rulebook has all of the rules you will be using on regular basis minus vehicle and infantry and aerospace rules. It also has two maps, record sheets and lots of fluff. The Mechs are not the greatest quality (the two premium are though) but they are great to fill out your force and can be made to look pretty good with work.
If you don't want to do that you can buy maps separately or you can use miniatures rules with terrain which are in the tactical operations rulebook. Miniatures are pricey at 12-16 bucks a pop so you if you are going to be building a small specific force it shouldn't run you too much. Ironwind metals is your source for that and they have mech packs that can save you money plus free shipping on orders over 150.

Battletech always calls me... it's like the Call of Cthulhu....
I play MWO, and think "Wow this is great! Just like the game!...... I should play the tabletop again!" And then realize I have no one to battle.

Get the Intro box set for the really awesome thick cardboard maps and plastic mini's (two premium in the box as well).
No reason at all to skip this box set.
