I have enjoyed the mechwarrior games, but really lack an understanding of the battletech universe.
any suggestions on which battletech novels to read first?
also, are there any series which primarily follow merceneries, rather than members of the main factions?

Check out Sarna.net - it has all the information you could ever want on the battle tech universe.
In addition, there are books focusing on the Gray Death Legion and the Wolf's Dragoons - though I can't really remember their names.
Lastly, welcome to the forums and one of the best videogame universes ever created!

I think there are many books covering mercenary groups. Gray Death Legion, Wolf's Dragoons, etc. all have some books for sure.
You can visit bg.battletech.com for some nice introductions to factions and good PDF previews. Also battletech.rpg.hu has a lot of lore on one place, be vary, however, as it is Hungarian site, so stick just to the stories.

The Gray Death Trilogy by William H. Keith Jr. sounds like it'll be your best bet.
1 - Decision at Thunder Rift
2 - Mercenary's Star
3 - The Price of Glory

I recommend the House sourcebooks which were (and may still be) up on the CBT main site for free.
