Events like this let people who spend time in the forums figure out who's going to play well with others and who won't, something that's very important in a team-based game.
The people in the forums are the people you're likely to run into in game - building good relationships starts early.

Do the same when the clans show up, but make upgrades and promotions rely on the Trials. You want your Star to become a Binary or a Trinary? Issue a challenge for a Trial of Position to claim Star Captain 2 or 3 (for Binary or Trinary). If you have a set Star Colonel, you may get promoted based on ability instead of a Trial.
Independent Merc companies (non-canon merc companies) would be free to expand as large as they want, up to Regiment level and depending on total respect gained from all factions as opposed to a single, as they would be player controlled.

The general consensus among the GDL pilots is pretty well the same as NWH's outlook - would we prefer to have the name if it is available? Sure, you bet. Will we be all 'omg u guyz sux!' if the Devs say that it's a restricted name? No, of course not. Most of us have a lot of love for the unit, the lore behind them, and what they represent. Even if we don't get the opportunity to use the GDL name, we are -still- the Gray Death Legion. We're a bunch of people who want to get together, have fun, and have friends in the unit that we enjoy blowing other people up with. If we get the tag, we get the tag, and we'll bear it proudly. If we don't, that doesn't change the fact that we'll still follow the standards and conduct ourselves along the same lines as the GDL.

No? Just me?
Either way, I just want to echo what DevilMan said. Whether PGI allows us to use the name Northwind Highlanders or not, we ARE Highlanders, and we will be representing ourselves thusly in the game. The majority of our members are drawn to the Highlanders for cultural reasons. Most all of us are of Scottish descent and those who are not, generally have a Celtic connection of some sort. This means that the Highlanders appeal to them.
To quote Shakespeare; a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. This is profound, because even if PGI locks us out, we ARE Highlanders, and our affections for this cannon unit are culturally motivated. I dare anyone to call me out for my culturally motivated choices and suggest they're wrong. I think you'll find that crosses a different sort of line than simply calling me "lame" or "wanna be pretender". Just sayin'.
So be a Highlander then, just not the NORTHWIND Highlanders. The devs aint stopping you from forming a group based on cultural traditions, im sure your group can come up with a sensible background story to fit in with bt lore. Your group r not the only ones, there are other scottish groups forming in House Liao with their own unique bckgrounds, if they can do it, why cant you?
Likewise, im sure there r many FRR aligned players who would love to play the Tyr Regiment but many accepted the devs decisions and formed their own units. The shieldwall of Rasalhague for eg. Im sure them vikings are as patriotic of their roots as you are. Im sure they dont feel less vikings just because they cannot take a famous lore unit name....
Im not trying go single u out or anything so i mean no offence.

There's more to it than just the Highlander background, though. As I stated earlier, most of us have an extensive history with the Northwind Highlanders. For some, they bought the source book the day it came out in 1996 and started their tabletop RPG campaigns as members of NWH. For others, NWH was the unit they first joined when they first started playing NM95, or MW3, or MW4, or MWLL, whatever. Either way, due to the nature of the MW/BT universe, we've formed a bond with a specific unit. That bond has been encouraged and fostered by MW/BT game developers for decades and its one that simply isn't going to be broken.
Now, again, that's not to say we demand the right to use the Northwind Highlanders name. We are not the Northwind Highlanders. We are a unit within the Northwind Highlanders, however. We share the name Northwind Highlanders with thousands of others and there will no doubt be other units in MWO that we share the name with as well.
That is the disconnect that many people demanding that canon names be banned have, however. Perhaps they formed their own completely unique merc unit in the tabletop version of BT, or in one of the online versions of MW. Whatever the reason, they didn't connect with one of the canon units as presented by the developers of the BT/MW universe. That's perfectly fine. But what right do they have to tell those of us who did connect with said units that we can't maintain that connection?
Again, this isn't the same as rolling a wizard named Raistlin in WoW. It's more like creating a Wizard of High Sorcery in the Dragonlance setting. And becoming a member of a canon unit in BT/MW was always encouraged by the developers.

In many ways I think it would be interesting contributingto part of the devs inner game.If I was in Northwind Highlanders to have a dev be the top guy. (sorry I dont know the units history) and for the most part you play like you wish but every so often the dev sends down orders that your needed at this planet. bring three lances or if your a merc unit like Grey death Legion, leader of that group is a dev. Usually your grinding away trying to imporve your mechs and piloting skills but every so often Dev Greyson Death Carlyle tells command that there is a merc contract on this world or that and to bring so many lances to do whatever. Nothing is predetermined for the battle you win or loose on how you play.
Personnely I think it would be far more interesting if we threw the battletech history away and created our own. With each battle you fight the overall winning and loosing changes boundry lines of territories and creates new histories and heros.

If that means I have to pug it for a while? Cool. More people to kill, more people to know, I'll stand proudly a Lyran.
I do find all the clan nonsense amusing however since the clans aren't even here, and the clan big people have already been named through lore and such ranks are not allowed. If I ever run into someone claiming to be Khan of Clan Big Nose or whatever I'm going to treat them like the loony they are

It's not really about being a lone wolf. It's just I would prefer to fight with people I can trust. The forums thing and all that is awesome and great for community but it is not a marker of skill. If I'm going to join a mercenary company it'd have to be an invite from people whom I've impressed, and who have impressed me. That's the way I played in previous MW games and I see no reason to change it now.
I do admit to being instantly drawn to that RP Batallion of the Highlanders though, I do love me some RP.

I agree Chris. I have looked at different groups who are recruiting, but after thinking about it, I've decided to hold off on joining a unit until after launch. Once I get a feel for the game and the people in it, then I'll decide which unit I want to join, if any.

I'd guess it would be similar to the announcement they made clarifying the mechlab - ie its own thread but just in the general discussion area. I could be wrong though. Depends on how official they want to make this.
