In many ways I think it would be interesting contributingto part of the devs inner game.If I was in Northwind Highlanders to have a dev be the top guy. (sorry I dont know the units history) and for the most part you play like you wish but every so often the dev sends down orders that your needed at this planet. bring three lances or if your a merc unit like Grey death Legion, leader of that group is a dev. Usually your grinding away trying to imporve your mechs and piloting skills but every so often Dev Greyson Death Carlyle tells command that there is a merc contract on this world or that and to bring so many lances to do whatever. Nothing is predetermined for the battle you win or loose on how you play.
Personnely I think it would be far more interesting if we threw the battletech history away and created our own. With each battle you fight the overall winning and loosing changes boundry lines of territories and creates new histories and heros.
That would be a lot of fun.

Then again if things just got busy - it means that they are working on the game which is also a bonus. I'd just really like to hear what he was going to say lol.

Nobody will be able to truly answer my question, but...
Does anyone have any idea how IS squads, such as the Sky Rangers, will receive orders? Or will it be up to those running the groups to make all decisions?

If you are a lone wolf there is nothing to name or belong to.
If you are a House pilot you dont get to name anything or have any kind of own organisation. You do get to call yourself a member of X House unit (not controlled by players) if you have gotten high enough faction standing ingame for it to become awailable to you.
If you are creating a Merc Company you do get to name it but you can not take a well known canon name for the unit.
If the developers are smart they will do it as first come first serve INGAME and nothing else as that will give everyone the same possibillities.
Regarding the Clan wannabes there are no Clans at the start of the game and you would not want to disgrace yourselves by posing as mercenaries just to get your group a name would you?

No one can claim the Empire! The Empire claims you and your soul. But you must be choosen, for the Empire's glory will be paved with the ashes of our enemies!
Oh and were non canon too, so take that

Gotta prep the second mech for release later in the day? I understand.
Also please make May merc money instead of money month. You already know you have our monies...
