I wouldn't mind it in spectator, but I think that should be it.

EDIT: On second thought, only in practice games. I can already see people abusing it when spectating, telling their friends on teamspeak that someone's sneaking up on them and such.

i didnt consider that.... i wanted a more robust spectator mode, but that will kinda wreck it, no way to stop ts from working when you die, so no way to stop abuse of spectator.

so training ground only then

^This. I think they should implement it as an option in a firing range/arena. If for some reason PGI is worried about people loafing on their servers spending too much time test driving mechs/weapons, they could issue xx amount as default time and from there charge a slight MC fee for arena/firing range time and/or make us pay for the ammo we use.

Be one with your mech, not piloting it. To a Mechwarrior, mech is an extension of your limbs. Read up on lore, it's interesting stuff.

MWO should be a Mechwarrior game, not a twitchy FirstPersonShooter.

Right. Mechwarrior ist not a FirstPersonShooter, nor is it a ThirdPersonShooter. It's a sim, and that's why it should be realistic - that means no third person camera.

I agree that a 3rd person view option would be good, however not at the expense of loosing the 1st / 2nd (depending on point of view) view. I see the 3rd person view option working in three modes.

View 1, as is at present
View 2, above a slightly behind your unit
View 3, at gound level, left or right and slightly behind your unit

It should also be possible to toggle between each view.

This is the case with all previous Mechwarrior games. They give you the option. There's also the option to disable everything but cockpit view on a per-match basis.

It gives you the option - want to play FirstPersonShooter? Knock yourself out. But 3rd person perspective is a vital Mechwarrior heritage. Forcing everyone into FirstPersonShooter mode would be total disregard for Mechwarrior heritage and fanbase.

Where have the Devs stated that 3rd person is coming?

If so, it's a terrible idea.

Mechwarrior is a simulator/FPS hybrid and needs to remain 1st person to maintain the immersion/experience of piloting a mech.

Spectator or training grounds only.

3rd person does not belong in a simulation

Mechwarrior is no First Person Shooter (btw: why do you write this bold every time?), only because it's from a first person perspective. See here for futher explanations: http://en.wikipedia....deo_game_genres

the only problem i have with 3rd person is the way it ends immersion. the answer to keep everyone happy is the module that lets you launch a 3rd person drone, it can be shot down(so you cant peek around a corner with impunity) and it maintains immersion, there is a camera back there, thats how he gets 3rd person view, not just magic or god view. unless its only for training, then whatever, i dont care if its magic, training is in a simulator, so its ok to have magic.

Different idea:

Add another information screen or multi-function display to the cockpit. In the display show the mech from some 3rd person angle, thus giving the pilot feedback about the mech's orientation but not live camera or targeting feedback.

More details:

This could be a simple wire frame or a fully rendered visual of the mech.

If a wire frame it could be a stardarized mech icon rather than having to make yet another drawing of every mech.

A simplifed terrain map could be included so the player could see if he/she was walking into something.

This would make the 3rd person view part of the information feedback system to the pilot rather than an alternative player perspective. (examples of other parts of the information feedback system would be the heat bar, speed bar, damage indicators, the map, targeting information, chat window, the arrows that already indicated torso twist (never use 'em))

Other/ Conclusion:
No, I'm not in favor of 3rd person. But I can understand the desires and needs for it. Visual feed back as to the mech's orientation is essential, which is why it is already in the game with those little arrow indicators. 3rd person POV would drastically improve how orientation information is communicated. I am trying to suggest a compromise that harnesses the informative power of 3rd person POV to communicate orientation without altering the perspective from which all the live environmental information is gathered.

so like a hologram of your mech walking on the right side, showing where your legs are pointed and where your torso is pointed. maybe even have the parts of your mech get yellow and red as damage climbs,

Nay i tell thy 3rd person is a no no.
Are you a Mechwarrior or not.
A mechwarrior sits in his mech. He doesn't float above it.
It will give Dagger906 exactly what he wants. :P
Hidding behind cover, aiming by 3rd person view,
jump jetting and then making head shots then falling behind cover again. :(
I would like a back camera or a scouting drone module that floats above your mech,
with a display in mech but NO 3rd person.

Glad the polls tend to support what I'm about to say. 3rd person in a simulator is dumb & a waste of time. I'd rather see something like a rear view camera. For me, jumping to 3rd person during collisions & when destroyed is also dumb. I'm a mech pilot. I want to be in my mech.

I put only in training grounds. I have a new idea though lets let it be used anywhere but for every second you are in 3rd person view it dose 5 points of damage to each part on your mech for each second you are in the view. That would make it work you get like 6 seconds of 3rd person view before you blow up. Sorry i know thats stupid but I think it is better then it being put in in any other way. 3rd person is 100 percent a bad idea for the game.

That is exactly it.
