Factions aren't implemented into MWO yet.

See the Tag under my name here?? Shows players that purchased a "Founders pack" when they had been available...
Founders pack where a bundle of - MC's, Premium time (1-3 months worth), and 1 or 4 Mechs (Jenner, Hunch, Catapult, Atlas) that are identical to standard, base variants but give us a 25% c-bill bonus when used... (but they can't be sold off...)

ok thank you, just starting and i notice that people with the starting mechs, ...like i was , are tottaly out gunned, i thought maybe the faction plus a mech bought might be a big help, now with my new mech two games in my firepower is tripled and i actually feel like im doing dmg.

You can join a faction by becoming active in their forums/RPing, but right now until Community Warfare comes out there are no benefits to joining.
Founders simply shows that someone bought into the game before Open Beta- they might have received a Mech or 4 from it, but those Mechs are simply standard variants with a unique paint scheme and a 25% c-bill bonus similar to the Yen-Lo Wang.
Trial Mechs can be hard to pilot, as they seem to overheat more and aren't as good as customized Mechs sometimes- but they allow you to grind c-bills and get a feel for the chassis without purchasing a Mech.

Not only a faction/formal group may help. You can join a TS server and do some drops with a team. Voice communication and teammates opens a new world.
Check this thread for all open servers.

I deeply recommend the Comstar EU (former Close Beta server), a more "neutral" server. Go to the "education channel" for some information (about builds, mechs, TS, almost anything really). Failing that go to any channel and ask for help )if no one is on a match). You will receive it.
