THIS IS NOT A THREAD TO GIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT 3rd PERSON VIEW.
To provide feedback, please use the following threads:

Official Feedback Thread:
http://mwomercs.com/...eedback-thread/

Unofficial Polls:
http://mwomercs.com/...son-its-coming/
http://mwomercs.com/...lay-which-view/
http://mwomercs.com/...estroyable-uav/

So what is the purpose of this thread?
1) Providing links for people to find relevant threads related to the topic.
2) Create centralized list of Alternatives and links to relevant threads.

The Problem: PGI wants to improve the new-user experience and reduce the learning curve.
PGI's Solution: Implement 3rd Person View.

Based on the vocal minority of the player base, the above threads show that most of this demographic are opposed to this solution. However, those threads are filled with "NO" and rather devoid of alternatives that solve the problem. After reading dozens of pages, probably less than 5% actually address other ways to solve the problem and without alternatives, PGI would have no choice to implement 3rd Person.

So I scoured as many of those posts as I could before my eyes bled as well as other threads in the forums to develop a list of alternatives and where possible links to threads that discuss these alternatives.

Here is the list I compiled that have threads:

Mitigate the use of 3rd Person View via rewards and/or advantages:

Make it a playback only feature:
http://mwomercs.com/...for-3rd-person/

Paint arrow on ground:
http://mwomercs.com/...son-view-issue/

List of ideas to help new user experience
http://mwomercs.com/...ser-experience/

Additional alternatives:
  • Lock Arms to Torso
  • Noob Camera that shows a top down view of just the players mech for the first X matches.
  • Have a beginner option toggle to make legs follow torso like the torso currently follows the arms.
  • Have a specific set of options in an arena (Solaris) mode like: Allow LRMS? Allow 3rd Person view?
Please provide any missing forum thread links and/or other alternatives and links that solve the problem. I will update this thread with them.

Please do NOT just post that you do or do not like implementing 3rd Person View. Use the above threads.

Also please do not post which alternatives you like or don't like. Or wwhat you think is good or bad about the alternatives. Make those posts in their respective threads or make a new thread if there is not one.

Thank you in advance for keeping to the intent of this thread and please provide additional alternatives and missing links/new threads.

Colorblind mode would be nice. I have at least one in the group I am with that is colorblind. Red and Green markers aren't good if they all look shades of brown to you!

Do not allow in clan wars.

Only in training matches with training mechs.

Do not allow someone to make money with 3rd person.

Allow people to select what type of match they want. 1st / 3rd / BOTH

I'm not sure if it is right to post that here, I have written it there but is is on page 90...

Make a Solaris Arena.
You earn no C-Bils and no XP there.
Mechs dont have repair costs.
There is a training area with courses, automatic LRM launchers, targets... and a "free move" area.
There are battle arenas.
Players can open and join matches as in many multiplayer game lobbies.
They can choose number of players, password and they can choose which team, restrictions... etc.
This way you could have not only matches with certain agreed rules (no LRM, all against all), you also could have training sessions (in the training arena) with one trainer in a team and the new players in the other. Or all in one team. In the training arena the players can change the mech they are viewing - so the trainer can explain and the others watch. Or the player moves and the trainer gives comments.

Solaris Arena is supposed to be all about making money, so you kinda have it wrong there I think. Instead you should earn cbills, but also have repair costs. Also I see no logical reason why XP shouldn't be earned in Solaris, but I wouldn't have a problem with that.

Couldn't they just put a big 3d-ish arrow that points to the direction that you are going? Kind of like the line on the map but closer to the center and easier to see. Also put the line thats on the map on their actual view when it can be.

edit: woops mis understood point 2. so this probably shouldn't be here.

IMHO i think they should just do something like torso lock so that your torso and legs move as one. Thus losing some twist radius and arm movement. not a huge disadvantage but seriously you have a freaking indicator on the map. How much more info about where your legs are pointed does one need?

Added/updated from private messages and posts. Please let me know if I missed anything or did not convey it well.

I'd love more suggestions and fleshing out some of what is listed above that is missing discussion threads.

i think that would also open the door for some serious competetive matches. i like it!

I wouldn't be opposed to a third person module, something that launched a very real and tangable camera drone that hovers over the shoulder of your mech.

The drone should be targetable and be destroyed.

I'd be totally fine with this, like the UAV that was used in the MW5 previs video. Just instead of flying way above the battlefield, it could be used just to see in 3p.

I'd like to suggest making 3rd person freely available but blacking out everything that isn't in the pilots line of sight, this would reduce the advantages of 3rd person making it equal to 1st person. This 'line of sight' effect could be used in tandem with a camera UAV -

- which would allow for the drones limited maneuverability in cases such as the pilot swinging the torso around and the UAV lagging behind your perspective.

Blacking out the infinite sky I can see as being a challenge and of course all the people who were expecting to exploit the advantages of 3rd person hating on the devs for taking them away.
