I just bought advanced zoom with experience and noticed the module costs 2mil to equip.

So I needed to unlock it so I can buy it or what?

Yes, you have to unlock the tech I guess, then you can pay to put it on your mech....you then take it into a match and realise you wasted 5000 experience and 2 000 000 Cbils.

Atleast that was my experience with it.

By the way, I recommend you spend that 2 mil elsewhere. Zoom module really sucks right now. Hopefully PGI will change zoom module so that it's just an extra available zoom level instead of the PIP they have.
