Ultimately, the problem with Mechwarrior is that it is a niche franchise. Armored Core proved that the mech setting is more palatable when it is anime style speedy robots blasting away with zero heat guns that level enemies quickly. Mechwarrior games attract MECHWARRIOR FANS, not the average internet twitch lover.
I don't really know how much more populated MWO would be right now even with a semi-functional version of Community Warfare running and all the new-player shart you're asking for. I haven't played a true mech game (MW4 didn't count because you could just run it arcade mode) in years, but I sat down and got back into it pretty fast. For the people just coming in the door with zero attempt to learn anything, well honestly I assume they were on the way out from day one. The learning curve is not that steep. It is definitely more than your average console shooter, so a lot of people leave right there. Most of them are probably younger than what I assume the target audience is.
This is a Mechwarrior game, made to be as true to Battletech as possible, for Mechwarrior fans. It was never going to be an astounding League of Legends / World of Tanks cash cow. Anyone who thought it would be huge was misleading themselves. All we can hope for is that it survives to CW, and CW is good enough to keep profits high enough that IGP doesn't shut the lights off.

"Jump on in... the waters great!"
I think I am gonna go for it. Starting a new game is a big deal for me. I take them seriously and once I am in, I stay until I simply can not take it anymore... coming from Diablo 3 right now and have been "homeless" for about 10 days now. If your a gamer, it really does feel wierd to be in those times where you are not playing anything at all. MWO has my attention. However worried about:
-Not understanding the physics or controls at all and being dumped on the field. If I could just pilot the dang thing in an open field with a few cones like a driver's ed course...that'd be greeeeeat. Now I read how Commandos get "legged" at the start of a match because they are deemed not fit for service (makes mental note...no commando). So what I have to look forward to is dropping in, moving backward when I am thinking I am gonna move forward, get my limbs blown off by a teammate who is irritated with me, then I go out to the front line with no arms and get swallowed like a goldfish. Sign me up!
- My other problem is the cash aspect to the game. I wanna spend about 60 bucks, the price of a game and would like to do it right away... but I do not know what the interface is going to look like. Will it just be one button to push to purchase the Wang and that is it? Can I purchase any mech I want with real bucks straight out the gate? If I wanna convert dollars to in-game money do I have to purchase something I do not want and then sell it back for half price just to get the in-game money?
- Can I use a gaming pad to play the game and is their support for such in the options?
If someone could help me with these 3 concerns, I would be grateful.
Thank you

Unfortunately, that's something the MWO community has been begging for since the closed beta. It hasn't happened yet. Fortunately, the trial mechs don't cost you anything in regards to cbills (in-game currency) to use, and it doesn't cost you repair and rearm (r&r) bills. It's kinda like taking the tutorial against live opponents, but without the helpful guide to help you understand the game.
The best thing I can help you with is to take a look at this as far as game and controls.

If you want to pay sixty, you get sixty dollars worth of MC - Mechwarrior Credits. You can purchase all kinds of stuff with MC, including any mech currently available. You however, need cbills to purchase or customize, and you can only earn that by selling your mechs and weapons, or by playing the drops.
You can indeed purchase any mech in the mechlab with MC. It's not particularly hard to purchase a mech. It's got enough safeguards to prevent you from accidentally buying a mech, but simple enough that it isn't hard to figure out. Click on a mechbay, add a mech, find the mech you want, click purchase with MC.

They don't have a lot of gaming device support right now. Right now, customizing config files are the only way to use gaming devices.
They do intend to add in support.

I hope you enjoy the game, and find other players to be as helpful to you as they are passionate about the franchise!

-I agree with you 100% that such a tutorial is needed for the game, but for the time being most people recommend joining a group to play with using the game's Teamspeak server to communicate. There is a forum section devoted to Mech Guilds so you can find some teammates to show you the ropes, as well as information on the teamspeak server elsewhere on these forums (sry I don't have link, I play solo

-You don't need to spend as much as $60, although that would get you quite a bit of in-game currency, called MC. There are 2 types of currency: C-Bills (free, earned by playing), and MC (cost $$). There is an exchange rate for MC and a button in-game that links you to a page to buy MC. I recommend trying the mechanics out before you buy, although buying a mech off the bat will improve your experience greatly.
-The game support joysticks, and there are threads currently active regarding specific controller support. I'd venture to say that most controllers work, but are none are yet officially supported. Personally, I would recommend Mouse + Keyboard overwhelmingly, with the exception of a good joystick + throttle setup once it is fully supported.

I have one more thing to ask about MC purchases please:
What is the resale rate for mechs?
Let's say an Atlas costs a nice round number like 10,000,000
When you go to sell it, will you get 5,000,000? or is it a better rate then that?

i would suggest a hunchback as your first mech. its tough, adaptable, fairly cheap, and not too fast.
there is no way to convert MC to CB. aside from selling a mech purchased with MC. i would not recommend that as the return is rather low. just play a few game and you should have enough for customization. though advanced equipment like XL engines will take some time

I'm not sure but it's roughly half. Not worth it at all. You gain 75,000+ Cbills from a loss and 100,000+ Cbills from a win. If the mech you use is one you bought, you have to pay repair and rearm costs, and those vary. In my light mech I might pay around 30,000 on average, but again, that is a light mech with some expensive parts.
Someone already mentioned it, but a Hunchback is a good starter mech. You could buy one now and save the rest of your MC for later when you know what you want to spend it on. After a couple matches, you can start customizing your mech, a little bit at a time.
