Isn't it something about proper nouns pluralising singular entities?
IE. Toronto Maple Leafs, not Maple Leaves.
Basically, everyone in the group is a wolf, and though they are all being grouped together by virtue of what they are, they are not, in fact, a distinct group of 'wolves'; they are wolfs. This is the 'herd of mavericks' school of English.
