I can't think of any way that I wouldn't be affected by having an opponent enjoying the advantages of 3rd person view while I restricted myself to 1st person. I don't want it, but offering it will affect me.

For reference, we also strongly recommend listening to Russ’s comments, as he provides a clear case for our approach.

Forgot to do this part before you posted mate, May want to try that again.

In any case, It would not affect as you (in playing in 1st person view) would never encounter a person using 3rd person in a match.

I think the issue here is people hear (and/or see) 3rd person and hop on the next bandwagon of misinformation.

for noobs?

i suggest a satellite view of your mech inside the cockpit(MFD) so that the noob mechwarrior will have an idea where his torso/legs are facing.

or

a hologram of his mech inside the cockpit will do also. (replace the bobble-head with a hologram of his mech).

or

a drone with a camera, launched from your mech. it will follow you, giving 3rd person view. can be shot down by enemy fire. LOL

3rd Person view would be fine as an option in a shooting range/arena for learning to drive mechs and/or testing new loadouts and would actually be kinda swell. Here's a recap of my idea on a simple way to make it work for everyone:

New players can be allotted a set amount of default time on the shooting range/arena so they can come to terms with mech driving before they're getting shot at, and buying a new mech could come with a little range time too. Beyond those allotted amounts, shooting range/arena time could be purchased with MC, and range ammo can be sold too for that matter...

1) This allows new players to figure out how to drive and shoot, including utilizing 3rd person for their orientation process.
2) It provides a solid start of a training grounds scenario.
3) Provides enough funding to justify the server space, even if people camp there
4) Satisfies the need to ease new players, without dividing the existing ranks

However when drop time comes, the training wheels come off...

I wish you would give us a little more info. Even if I have an option to never play with people using 3rd person view, it still leaves the fragmenting of the users issue, the issue of different balancing needs that will arise, etc. But most importantly, the fact that this takes precious development man-hours away from the current game engine problems affecting the 1st person experience. Le sigh.

I think as long as no tactical advantage (from thorough play testing) is given it shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps limit it to a very close in or narrow fov or tight over the shoulder. Another cool (out in left field option) option could be to implement a replay/theater mode which has full 3rd person so you can snap screenshots or movies, but that's just wishful thinking on my part. I assume most of the push for 3rd person is from newer players who aren't as steeped in the cockpit sim genre or the console expats like Mechassault...

Screw it those other guys are right. F 3rd person, and work on rearview cameras and firing weapons. That's where the win is...

We don't want it. We hate it. It'll ruin the game.

Thank you for your time.

I sure am glad I haven't played this game in two weeks. It'll make it even easier to never play again when this horrible change goes live. I told people months ago that PGI was incapable of making good decisions. I hate always being proven right.

Well, that was so vague that it said absolutely nothing, will accomplish nothing, and makes no one whatsoever feel any better about it at all.

Was that the point?

Let me translate for you then....

He's saying that if they find a practical reason to make a 3rd person mode... then they will implement it as an option.

Here's my 2 cents in the matter. 3rd person in a simulator is pointless. Mechwarrior Online is a first-person Mech SIMULATOR. That being said... what could be implemented to give an external view of the mech.... UAV. There was a trailer that showed a UAV being launched from a Warhammer. Now THAT is a practical 3rd person view.

I saw NO to 3rd person view... It give you too much of an advantage (view wise) than you would have in first person. This game should stay first person. If you added 3rd person it would make no sense to use 1st person.. you would be narrowing your view..
Stupid idea if you ask me.

Here is my question, in the previous mechwarrior games 3rd person did 2 things that really ruined the game.

1-It ruined any real effect being fired upon had on the attackers accuracy (flashes, explosions, rocking)

2-It gave you extremely increased situational awareness, witch is perhaps the MOST important aspect of PVP.

I just don't see how a game where you guys are trying to balance it so well can deal with 2 things that turn it into simply firing at each other and being not effected by any of the situational or combat haze that effects first person.

Of special note is radar...3rd person will DESTROY the effectiveness of mechs hiding behind you, unnoticed because of no radar lock, now you will see them or see when and where you are getting attacked from bright as day.

Incorrect. It would split the playerbase and that effects everyone. The playerbase currently isn't exactly large and splitting it will only hurt it at this stage.

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't matter that I disable it for myself, I'd like to see a game mode option for everyone in the game to be forced to play without it (if they implement 3rd person). No way should it be part of combat that affects a global map type game either. I see it (if implemented), as a low experience option, to help familiarize people with aspects of the game. And obviously for replays, and or spectator mode.

The thing that is really kind of off, is that with technology as it is in the game, that there aren't rear view cameras or rear view radar for that matter, or even a rear view mirror. Its just one of those things we shouldn't think about I guess. Suspension of disbelief.

i actually have a pretty slick solution to the problem.

One way to do it is once the we get the ranking system (that is still part of phase 3 MM system) you could have the option open for rank say 1-5 (of for the sake of argument 100 scale) and after that it is disable for anything but friendly pre-made matches outside of the CW. That way you can still "warm" the newcommers up and get them familiar but without affecting the rest of the game. And you would give the people who like to make machianimas a better tool to do so.

<-- 100% against a third person view option. I also find myself wondering if P.G.I. has any resistance to peer pressure.

As always, the more vocal, younger part of the community jumps to conclusions and starts ranting like a 6 year who did not get its lollypop in the right taste and color...

Guys the man said they are looking into it, will try to do it in a way that will not affect gameplay. For gods sake 3 years ago everyone thought this game is vaporware....

Give them some credit as you have already given your money anyway. (if you did not then why the big concern? you wont give it to them anyway).

And show me another developer who talks and discusses issues with the community? Not just tosses out the pie for you saying: "Eat it or leave it, "

What did you guys read in there that made you feel better?

Nothing whatsoever. I thought I'd mistakenly gone to BSGO's forums and hit their stock response "We're aware of it, and we're looking into it."

The only way it "won't affect you" should you not be using it yourself is if the games are completely segregated so that first-person and third-person players cannot be in the same match.

But whatever, can't do much but sit and wait until they say something that...well...actually says something. :)
