Lately there's been a fair bit of discussion about how a 3rd person view may be brought into MWO, with the general opinion of it being overwhelmingly negative. I share those views; but unfortunately that doesn't mean it won't happen anyway. So here's a thought I had that might make the idea of a 3rd person viewpoint easier to swallow, and perhaps even add something to the game: it's a piece of equipment you fit to your mech.
When activated, the equipment launches a camera drone that hovers behind the mech and relays it's sensor data. There would have to be a key to switch between views. This means it can have a different (more limited) sensor suite; if you want to use thermal or the HUD you have to jump back to the cockpit. It can also be seen as it buzzes around (potentially giving away the position of anyone using it) and destroyed - it's a small target that can't be locked, but a hit from anything ought to bring it down. When destroyed or inactive, of course, the player can only use normal 1st person.
Simply for puposes of discusison I'm imagining the launcher and relay system as weighing 1 ton, occupying 1 critical slot, and able to be placed anywhere; ammo would be perhaps 10 drones to a ton.
Would something like this make the 3rd person view more acceptable?

Stop rolling over and taking it.
Vote with your wallet, and your feet. If 3rd person gets implemented, I'm simply out. I have no desire to replay MW4 with added red squares.

I got a great idea. We'll have a 3rd person view from behind the pilot's head. And then we'll add a British narrator for play by play so the game is like a documentary!

The only real way i could see a 3rd person view is if you can buy a probe/droid/scout pod thingy that hovers over one of your shoulders or above/behind your mech. Something that floats above the mech and can be shot at/out of the sky. That would be something with out any kind of weapon or what not, make it reward players for being shot at so that players who dont use them can take them out if they dont like it, also scouts can get some bonus payouts if they could take them out before heavies and such.

PGI can take this 3rd person nonsense and stick it of their collective exhaust ports.

I'd like 3rd person so I can check out how stylish and cool my mech looks, I don't want it getting in the way of gameplay though.
Maybe they could do something with the lighting engine and only make mechs visible when 'illuminated' by a cockpit vision light thingy, so only the mechs that you could see in first person are visible when your checking things out in 3rd. Sounds like a lot of effort for nothing though.

Tu rd person view, because that's all it is good for in matches. As a match reply, fine, cool, great. Just not in matches.
