So it's 3049 and we're fighting in giant bipedal amored vehicles. Mankind has expanded throughout the universe. We have all sorts of goodies to play with.

Should our mech have a rearview camera?

Maybe we can get some ductape from Galaxy Mart (where we got our Hula Girl) and stick some mirrors outside the windows?

What do you guys think?

You ask: "Rear view camera?"

I ask: Rear mounted weapons?

Why does a rear-view camera rely on rear arc weapons? The visible, IR and magscan sensors are described as providing the pilot with a 360 degree view anyway. Besides knowing whats directly behind you can give you a tactical advantage with your front arc weapons.

Rear view cameras are extremely useful in formations for determining spacing and cohesion. They also help with situation awareness. There is absolutely no reason not to have them, I was actually very disappointed when they weren't included in MWLL and kept having to stop and see if my unit members were following me. Yes, radar does help, but you can't get a clear picture of which way your ally is facing, weather or not they are under attack, and their distance without one. The camera is also useful when traveling in reverse, especially in combat, to avoid getting caught on a wall or other obstruction.

This seems to indicate no need for rear view ... you already have it.

Directly in front of the MechWarrior is a primary view screen, which displays a computer generated, three-sixty degree view of the surrounding area shrunk into a single front view. The targeting reticule appears on the screen, manipulated by the joysticks, to show when a target lock has been achieved. The screen can magnify images.

@WKC

*sigh* What I am saying is that, if I can have a camera so I can SEE who is on my 6. Then why can I not have weapons so I can SHOOT who is on my 6?

Not only a rear view camera, but a multiple angle camera. The hat switch on my joystick has 8 positions, I would like to have 8 different camera angles asigned to that so I could pan around 360 degrees. I could also asign a couple of keys to look down and straight up. I think this would greatly improve my situational awareness. Good Idea Cochise! :P

We have 360 degree radar for that, besides you should have a buddy to protect your back if you plan on succeeding.

Most Mechwarrior games have lacked one thing...rear facing weapons like they do in the table-top game. A rear camera would be most useful. And rear mounted weapons would be useful too. But only on the torsos...well legs too.

Rear weapons don't make much sense to me from a gameplay perspective but rear camera does. I think it is pretty logical to have a rear mounted camera on your mech. Since we had rear cameras in MW4 I'm assuming we'll have them in MWO. I know the two games aren't going to be exactly the same but it just seems like one of those features which would logically carry over.

@ Gun Bear. Radar isn't the same as seeing. It helps sometimes to see more than a Dot on the radar. Claw55 said it best I think. Plus from a visual aspect it helps with immersion. Heck, modern fighter pilots have radar, yet they're trained to "Keep your head on a Swivel." Sometimes the Mk1 eyeball is the best.

Obviously difficulty coding and prioritization is an issue.

That being said, it does seem silly that you wouldn't have a rear facing camera. However, it would seem like they would be easily knocked out from damage. It would certainly be usefull.

I have a counter for you Gun Bear. Your radar can be spoofed, and as someone else said, you have no idea what way they <enemy OR friend> is facing, and if you lost track of your radars range, just how close they are. That rear angle camera can be a blessing. I really do not know how the system described above, the whole "Directly in front of the MechWarrior is a primary view screen, which displays a computer generated, three-sixty degree view of the surrounding area shrunk into a single front view. The targeting reticule appears on the screen, manipulated by the joysticks, to show when a target lock has been achieved. The screen can magnify images" work with out data over load. and I agree, we need rear facing weapons!

Uh, if your runnin from combat MB, a rear facing firing arc could potentially save your life. Dump enough blind pulse laser fire as you make a tactical retreat and your enemy MAY not follow. and MW4 was a bad bad game. No logic from that game should carry into this game, ALSO the fact that MW4 is several decades out from where we are starting iirc.

Rear view camera without rear arc weaponry;

Watching your imminent death without anything to do about it.

Also: The concept arts for the Atlas, Centurion and Dragon all show changes to their configurations which do away with their rear-arc weapons and turn them all to be forward-facing.

It would have to be degraded resolution and draw distance to keep performance from crapping out, but I always liked the idea of having compressed 360 in front of me. It could be semi transparent and take up a band in the top 10% of my screen.
