Besides abusing bad game mechanics ... what reason would you have to pilot anything else?

To stay under future tonnage limits or to go really fast.

Anything that moves faster than 60kph can and will do horrible things to the behind of your precious Atlas.

Because the Atlas is slow and speed kills! I will take my 133 k/h centurion any day over a fatlas.

Mount heavier longrange guns (CAT-K2), go fast (JR7-D), spam lasers (HBK-4P), spam lasers whilist going fast (JR7-F).

Guessing someone got ripped a couple new ones by an Atlas. This is a new one honestly, I really can't remember hearing anyone complain about Atlas being overpowered..

It's nasty if you get thrown into a drop with several enemy 100 tonners, especially if your team gets stuck with Awesomes instead (takes a good Aws pilot to equal an average Atlas pilot imo). This will be fixed in the future as drops will have weight limits.

Also: because variety is fun.

This can't be a serious thread.

You're all missing the point of the thread.

Clearly, anything that can beat an Atlas is abusing a bad game mechanic because 100 tons > all.

an atlas mounts a huge amount of firepower but it's far from invulnerable to other types of mechs. In any type of group combat they'll probably have a weight limit. Going too heavy on assault mechs is going to seriously limit your options in combat. Brute force doesn't always win in mechwarrior.

Ayup. Assaults bring a lot of firepower in one spot, and can take a pounding...but can be easily outmaneuvered by even a fast medium, both in a straight up fight, and from a more tactical standpoint. That said, they're great for controlling an area, such as the enemy base, or your own on defense, or a hill for your LRM boats.

Basically, they have their own role, but will fail terribly against more flexible opponents without support. This is not, nor will it ever be, Assault Mechs Online.

Back when matchmaking didn't account for tonnage there existed such threads. And to be honest, it might still have merit. We'll see once phase II comes out and how all the merc corps handle the new meta game (creating the perfect 8 person team). And I'm sure a number of them will be trying 2 things: all Jenners and all Atlases.

I LOVE my atlas....I run almost exclusively assaults and when I am with a good group. (Not 8 atlas mind you a good mixed group) I have the most fun with it. Though I do appreciate the kills I get when an Atlas K charges me and I target that fragile little gauss of his :)

Because I find piloting an Atlas a boring experience and generally an unfun mech to run.

I'll pilot one of those. You know when you get things on your back? When you end up fighting more than 1. How many mechs do you know that can handle a few Alphas to the back then turn around and pop off a leg?

As for abusing game mechanics ... lights are abusing quite a bit at the moment. Netcode, bad hit boxes and no collision mechanics. I guess some of the light pilots are new people who can only afford lights. Most are people abusing the bad game mechanics.

I can answer this in one word... Boring!

Furthermore the mechs are well balanced in the hands of experianced players. why would anyone want to play an atlas? way too expensive and then to upgrade and equip also expensive. then when a cammando, no less, makes a fool out of you expensive to repair.
