Already been suggested in multiple other threads on 3rd person matter. And see my post above.

I know I been one of the poster but then get Flame by the Bipedal cheese burgers on the forum for even bringing it up.

The only way to deal with this is to put back in the game a chex box to lock the legs to stay with the center torso at 140 degrees lift and right.

No need for 3d god Mode and the guys that like keyboard Kungfu don't have to chex the box's

I would bet this has been posted at some point during the 3rd Person View battles (if it has, I claim no ownership), but what about a top-down representation of a standard mech (same as the paper-doll), with the feet always pointing towards the top of the screen, showing which way the torso is pointing relative to them? Similar to what World of Tanks does in the bottom left corner of the screen. No 3rd Person Camera, no additional heavy resources (a simple 2d model consisting of only 1 moving part that rotates), and you could even make it an option you can toggle on/off in the menu! Problem solved. Money please.

Well, to be honest, they have something similar already in that the hud shows what direction the legs are pointed with a dotted arrow, and what direction the torso is pointed with the highlighted view cone.

They actually have redundancy here because there is TWO indicators of leg orientation and torso orientation.

One on the battlegrid and the other on the compass at the top represented by those two triangles with the numbers ranging from 0-360º.

The bottom yellow triangle on the compass shows legs and their bearing of degrees along the compass.

The top yellow triangle on the compass shows torso and it's bearing of degrees along the compass.

So without having the 3D hologram [which fits anyway, since it was in mechwarrior 2] there is already two different ways to see which direction your legs face and which direction your torso faces.

Although, yes, an optionional 3d monitor showing your mech ala MW2 would easily serve the same purpose as third person just as clearly.

Bottom left corner, granted -- it's for your target, however, I don't see how the same thing couldn't be applied to your own mech for orientation reference.

Also, without the wireframe.

Mechwarrior 3 had it for both enemy targets and your own mech. Your own mech was in the bottom right corner, targeted mechs bottom left corner, both rendered in poly's not wireframe and animated in real time as can be seen in this screenshot;

This should be an optional monitor that comes on screen at the push of a button and is on by default for new players.

Similar to how Weapon Doors work, instead of opening your doors though, it would fold out a screen.

As mentioned earlier, you'd even get to see your awesome skin this way, sans 3p.

I've made a crude mockup for MWO using the Atlas for reference;

Somebody please tell me what is so wrong with that and how is it less usable than the battle grid, and how is it "In the way" since it's just blocking part of the cockpit that you already can't see through?

It's the clear solution. The black should be transparent green to match the rest of the hud and it would look perfect.

P.S.

The key is "OPTIONAL" and should be togglable via ingame bind to enable or disable this self portrait monitor, but should come on by default and remember it's status between games, like the weapon groups.

There was already a user suggesting they add top down stick figure of a Mech like they have for a tank in Battlefield 3.

Stop trying, It was all already suggested and devs are very much aware of all of the different solutions to this that already exist in other games.

Has anybody made a functional mockup? See above post.

Illustrates the idea perfectly, fits in the canon, and is an otherwise quite elegant solution.

No offense intended to people attempting to make suggestions that replace 3rd person view, but c'mon.

Having problems telling where you're going are not going to be fixed. Period.
The tools are already in place in 2, TWO! different locations.
Your compass has 2 triangles on it. The direction you're traveling and the direction you're facing. They also have a connecting yellow bar that shows you how far you are in relation to the 2 centres.
Your mini-map also shows your direction with a white spotted arrow, and your facing with the faded white triangle (the tip starts at your 'Mech and opens from there).

If someone can't pay attention to either of these, they won't bother to look at any other indicator unless you shove it in their face. Taking resources to plan/design/implement this would be a waste of resources.
