We have discussed this amongst some of the guys we play with. We generally run 2/2/2/2 or pretty close if possible to maintain balance in the group and to be able to get everyone playing no matter what they are flying. Our concern was not having enough fire power to be able to drop 8 assaults. The other side of the coin is that they are so slow, they will not be able to defend the base and cover the map without splitting their forces. At that time the more versatile lance is better. When and if the maps get bigger, Steiner lances will be even at a larger disadvantage.

I'm thinking all light teams will fair way better than all assault.

I'm hoping they make a tonnage range for the premade queues, to be honest. Like between 350 and 500 - so you can't do all jenners (280 tons) and you can't do all assaults (800.)

We shall see.

Tonnage limit is not a good idea - everybody will just run virtually the same team composition. For 500t weight limit, it would be something like 3 Jenners, 3 Catapults, 2 Atlases. Actually, given that we don't have full range of mech weights available yet, I bet it would be exactly the same team composition - at least I can't come up with a good alternative one for 500t limit.

imo different tonnage leagues would be the best.
i dont know if it would fit into the gameplay but it would be the most fun for serious gaming clans.

i would realy like to see something like that.
( even its vs MW rules but you could implement clanmechs with a higher tonnage to fit them in there and to balance it very easy )

Tonnage alone will be inadequate for matchmaking.

Eight trial mechs with basic pilots will not perform comparably to eight same-class custom mechs piloted by comm-coordinated master pilots.

You could lower a Cat to a HBK and up another to an awesome. 3jen, 1 HBK, 1 Cat, 1 AWS, 2 Atlas

You could lower an atlas to an awesome and up a cat to an awesome. 3jen, 2cat, 2AWS, 1 Atlas

Lower 2 jens to streakmandos and 1 cat to a HBK and 1 cat upped to an atlas. 2CMD, 1 Jen, 1HBK, 1 cat, 3 atlas

With the current streaks, the 3 cats probably win. But assuming that build is removed some of the other drops have a chance.

How do you expect 8 trial mechs to form a group? They would have to be communicating in some fashion (there is no lobby).

same way i got into grouping in my 5th game, someone sent me a friend invite.

or they pop into a ts server, or any other potential scenario in which new players who want to do team play meet up.

I'm not saying it's likely (in fact probably unlikely to see a full 8 man of new pilots in trials) but it should still be accounted for as it is possible and likely that there may beseveral trials on a team or mostly new pilots grouping together.

Maybe the premade group could put their heads together, and come up with a good spread of mechs that can deal with a myriad of other team's mech loadouts, from the extremes of 8 lights to 8 assaults.

Play defensive and use 2 jenners and 6 atlas.

but that is kind of the issue.

Back from vacation. Seems they really want to give us 8v8 without any restriction... sad news. Means half team will "forced" to switch mech.
