I think as long as you can correctly identify both by their Clan/IS name depending on your preference and or calling out targets in combat.

That is what really matters. Unless you are RPing your character and your unit/Clan.

Aside from that, I don't think it really matters.

Most of us know the difference.

I think the "trick" question would be why or how the Clan units received their IS names or how the mechs received their initial Clan names prior/post production?

Make it about Mech/Lore trivia :P

I.E. the Thor/Summoner if I remember correctly was referred to as Thor because of carring the AC/LBX, and the ERPPC - Thunder and Lightning as the IS pilots did not know it was called the Summoner.

It is interesting to see if the clans will name the Daishi a Warhawk if you play as a clanner if ever available. Im wondering does the innersphere have any knowledge of clan tech mechs & can identify the IFF mech type. If they are finding out first hand what clan mechs are then shouldn't the IFF read unavailable as to what mech is on the radar scans.

I can really picture clan mechs just walking over innersphere mechs.

I like to use the IS names sometimes to make Clanners mad.

Go with the Clan names, we in the IS will find some way to cope (insult you).

I like the clan names better but I find the IS nicknames far easier to say..they just slide of the toungue easier and so I find myself saying them alot....

why should a trueborn call a DIRE WOLF a warhawk?? i think you mixed up the lines there.. ;-)

but to answer your question:
no, IS radars cannot identify clan Mechs at first sight.

the Timber Wolf for example got it´s IS name because the radar readout jumped between Marauder(MAD) and Catapult (CAT) when trying to identify the Mech.

(that´s why Paul says we ain´t getting a freggin Mad Cat, because it´s a Timber Wolf! :) )

I could really care less what they are called. IS or Clan names don't matter to me much.

My voting was a mixed bag. For some of the mechs, I prefered the IS name and for others the clan name.

Personally I favor all of the Clan names, it speaks to me more than the IS names, call me biased, but a Timber Wolf, is a Wolf, not a Cat, so, I do not like MadCat.

It'd be really cool if the obvious answer was taken:

If you are playing an IS faction, you see the IS names.
If you are playing a Clan faction, you see the Clan names.

It'd be cool for fluff, accurate and solve the debate entirely all at once.

Except for us Clanners fighting for our adopted homes in the Inner Sphere.

I don't understand why they stubbornly adhere to the IS names. Yeah, it was cool when the Clans invaded, made a lot of sense, just like how NATO gives codenames to Soviet/Russian equipment. The DCMS even had different codenames from the FedCom (like the Hagetaka). But it can only lead to confusion, ie:

Clanner A is issuing a batchall to Kuritan B. A says, I'm brining a Mad Dog! B looks at the batchall, doesn't recognize the name and substitutes Mad Cat, instead. It's angry and furry, it's gotta be right. Right? It's even worse with the new SLDF when you have Nova Cats, Lyrans, and Dracs all trying to say, 'You've got a Mad Dog/Vulture/Hagetaka coming in!'

I can already see the hilarity ensuing, as people try to list off every name of something as it heads to make sure that the point gets across.

MW2 was my first exposure to the BT universe, I only knew the Clan names until I got my hands on a copy of TRO3050.

It was kind of funny, I initially assumed that the Mad Dog was misspelled Mad Cat. It was wierd to see the Timber Wolf on that page.

When I first saw its Mat Cat name, it was on a Kinex (I hope I spelled that right.) box set. My first thought was "WOW! That looks a LOT like a Timber Wolf!"
