Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there could be the possibility to release a map editor so that the community can create own maps.
I'm no expert but the cryengine has a sandbox SDK editor, could you use that for MWO?

Those custom maps should be launchable from the game but reward/cost no exp/CBs in any way.
(Can't be abused for farming!)
Every month or so, the best maps could be reviewed by PGI and integrated into the game as regular maps. The creator of the map could be compensated by a few MCs or something special (a uniquely colored mech, etc.).

I don't know how active the community would be in that regard or if a "amateur" can create a map of sufficient quality.
But the map creation tools should already exist and even a few not-so-perfect maps would be a great addition, right? I would love to at least give it a try.

Please give me your oppinions.
Greetings
Nightfangs

I don't see this happen. Ever.

Wow! You really are looking way ahead of the horizon aren't you? They are still arguing over a couple of custom paint jobs.

Nightfangs, great idea, I was toying with the idea of formatting a suggestion for it myself. Further, I would say that the map should only work locally for testing until it was submitted to PGI for audit and added into an official release. At this point, PGI could issue some MC as compensation and add the creators name to the credits, which as a non transferable virtual currency shouldn’t, as far as I know cause any legal/tax issues. PGI would be the owner of the map at this point and make any changes to it they felt nessacary, however the mapper would be allowed to use the map as an example of his work in his portfolio, or PGI may feel that the quality of the work merits employment.

Also, textures and models would have to be limited ones currently included in the PAK files to avoid any unscrupulous mappers stealing textures and models which would open a legal can of worms for PGI. If a new texture or model is required for the map, the mapper could submit a request for its inclusion if the map was deemed by PGI to be nearly ready for audit. This would also mean that player created content was compatible with PGI's cannon, so you would be making maps on already introduced planets, eg. an icy tundra near frozen city, river city space port, etc. Eventualy, each planet would have dozens of maps, but without knowing how the Meta game is going to work, its impossible to say if this would even be worth it.

Unlikely, but the good news is that MechWarrior: Living Legends are most likely always in the need of more people creating stuff so that could be a good venue for anyone looking to show of their skills and that in turn could lead to work with PGI in the future.

That being said having that k9ind of stuff for this game (outside of the odd competition) would eat up way to much time as making a good map is more difficult then most people think it is.

"Can" and "Want" are completely different things.

There is a community driven mech game, but it's not this one.

At this point in the game, even just evaluating the idea would be taking valuable developer time and resources, and most likely they'd have to send out an actual development pack to people and they ain't got time for dat

A good place for the community to start, though, would be to attempt to make a suitable map using the Cryengine SDK and MWO's existing textures/models. You won't have any option to play them but it would be a good proof-of-concept

I honestly think that era of gaming is over. It's the past, although it was wonderful with all the mods and custom stuff back then.

There is already one you can use.

http://mycryengine.com/

Its the SDK for the engine the game is built on. Bear in mind you won't have any of the assets (objects, trees, grass, rocks etc etc) that PGI is using, but you can still make maps that would work in MWO. (with some additions from PGI of course)

Note its not that easy to do good terrains, but its still fun to stuff around with even if you don't really know what your doing. ;)

I'll post up some pics of some maps ive done in it...........note none of them are finished. ;)

A desert map......

Valley River Type map

Grassy Valley Map with a cave....

Another Desert / Rockies map....

Granted they aren't exactly made with mech combat in mind or be any good for it, but the heightmaps & terrain textures done by players could definately be used by PGI.......if they so wished.

Pretty much this, people don't want cheaters, they want their persistent stats and they want to play on consoles. None of these goals work well with modded games online.

Wow, your maps are awesome.
It would be so great to be able to play on them.
You are my hero. ;-)

Mods dying out and being replaced by soulless DLCs...
I want to participate in and be part of a living game... not just consume and pay for a shortlived, artificial product.
I hoped that thought would just be one of my pessimistic fantasies. *sigh*

I´d love to have a map editor aswell, been thinking about it already while reading into battletech stories from some pdf´s, after realizing that the first story i read was exactly about the Frozen City region in MWO - devs must´ve read the same :)

How great it would be to let your imagination become alive for other scenarios!
Heck we´d even be able to make other game modes, giving us a break from the constant TDM/flagrush.

Of course there´d need to be strict quality control on submitted content, but the benefits of having a gazillion people making maps with no time constraints attached (contrary to MWO Developers) would be overwhelmingly awesome methinks!
