So you have finally downloaded the release version of MWO and installed it. once you have finished celebrating with a fine cigar and brandy its time to get down to business of reducing your opposing mechs to inert peices of scrap.

The first battle in the minds of players will go something like this . 12 mechs lined up at the drop point organised into two balanced fireteams with designated scout and supporting missile fire striking off in a flawless pincer movement to flank the opposing team with scouts perfectly positioned in a superior firing position spotting targets. catapults laying down suppressing barrages of missile fire keeping the enemy pinned down as the Atlas moves in to get things done, wheeling through the city streets with the grace of a gazelle and utilising cover to minimise exposure untill the poor wretches are locked on and pummelled with a plethora of Autocannon , PPC and Laser fire. all in all a cakewalk extrordinaire for the Pro's with the hapless franchise newbies decimated and QQ'ing worse then angry german kid at Quake.

What i think will happen

The match will start with a mixed bag of mechs completely mismatched in terms of armament and tonnage , the first few minutes of the match will be consumed by an awkwardly unchoreographed dance routine as people stab the controls to see what does what maybe accidently shutdown their mech or alpha strike the friendly commando infront sending it either face down or KIA. when the battle begins in earnest the surviving raven will run for the perfectly placed ridge ahead of them only to discover the top is not a plateau perfect for spotting out of harms way but a vertical drop cliff into a ravine. Team A's Atlas will charge down the centre of the map probably commenting to themselves how they will "get some" and "open up a can" , while the heavies run ahead with some of the more tactical players using buildings/mountains to mask their own approach with everyone bumping into each other due to not having the required spacial awareness of their mech causing impact damage. when contact is finally made it will become an awkward peek a boo with lasers and autocannon fire whizzing everywhere except near the targets , probably demolishing a small city in the process leaving the Team B mechs virtually unharmed. close combat will see more ramming and missing , with doses of friendly fire from overzealous snipers trying to steal a kill by firing into the brawls. untill it downs to two mauled assaults slugging it out down to their machine guns as Team A's atlas goes critical and the Team B feels the sense of victory washing over , not noticing that Team A's raven has dug himself out of the ravine after all this time and finishes him off with a small laser blast.

just my oppinion but from experience with online gaming scenario B is likely ^_^

There is going to be a MYRIAD of instances where my Mech won't be doing what I want it to as I get used to the controls (this is why I'm ADAMANT about wanting a training area where you can pick a Mech, spawn, test out it's weapons in a non-hostile environment and get used to the controls)

I'm actually fine with not getting into battle until I've better familiarized myself with the controls, otherwise it'll just be a trial by fire and an exercise in futility as I'm mashing keys and forgetting what button to press to get my desired effect.

It's there in my sig.... toil more in training, reap more rewards in battle.

I concur with Aegis. We should be allowed to train and practice with our 'Mechs before we ever set foot on the battlefield: We do not rise to the occasion, we fall to the level of our training.

I'm sure there will be some sort of training area. Otherwise, how can units develop tactics, or peeps actually learn how to pilot their mech properly? Also, I'm not convinced its always going to be 12v12. There have been plenty of instances where the devs have been playing 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4's. That would be ideal, because if there isnt a training area, small time games would allow units to fight one another to develop those tactics.

They already said they plan to have something to help introduce players to the controls.

Hopefully it isn't just a tutorial, but a full training regiment and training area that you can pop in to at any time to test stuff out.

And somewhere in the back there is a Hunchback that's taken the time to look over the controls in the Options panel, and is now waiting to bag something big that's utterly out of its depth.

^_^

I can picture it taking place in a drop. Before actually dropping, there'll be pre-drop checks. You'll get prompts like "Push M1 to test your weapons" and you'll press the button and get a response from an NPC technician that "Weapons online and working." Or something like that.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the same in a few games over the years. Remember Halo, anyone?

For me ? I will be jamming the trigger on my Centurion, yelling "CRY SOME MORE" and sending waves and waves of missiles and AC shots to anything I lay my sights on.

Till the AC goes empty and echos clang clang clang ala MW2 merc style.

I just had a good laugh as I visualized that opening match as we all cut our teeth! Oh the laughs AND cries of frustration we will see if we DONT get a training area to relearn what we are doing and learn where are bodies in the game space are. I agree, we need a training area, to learn what controls do what, and IF its a communal TA, FF should decidedly for this area ONLY be turned off.

No amount of training will over come first contact with the emeny ( IE Fear and Panic will always be there) as the training book will get promply thrown out the window. So just point your gun sights at the enemy and pray and spray and hope your aim is better then his.

Xantars, while you are right, its much like even the best laid plans, nothing survives first contact, BUT, having a place where we all can just get re-aquainted with our mechs and how PGI makes/made it work, is what we would like to see, if for no other reason than just to not burn C-Bills while we learn to walk again so to speak ^_^

Half the battlefield will be immobile, caught in the same moment of euphoria that you are lol. It'll be like homecoming on Rannoch. "It happened... we're finally here... it's everything I thought it would be and BOOM!" "Oh right, I'm supposed to be shooting at stuff, forgot"

We're not necessarily talking about tactical training. Chances are there will not be any enemy AI, so if a training mode allows you to create enemy Mechs, chances are they'll just be sitting there like target practice.

The "training" I speak of is merely control and operations of the Mech. If you're not proficient with that, I hope we can slap a "Student Pilot" notice over our Mechs until we get used to the control scheme.

I honestly would love something akin to drivers ed, namely, get into the mech and run it in an obsticle course to get use to its 'size' then get onto a firing range where i am given a set of targets, or if not that, just a place where i can face my mech into a hillside and open up with everything i got to see how fast i burn ammo or heat up or anything else.

I hear ya.

Startup/Shutdown
Fore/Reverse Throttle
Turning
Twisting
Crouching
Heat Management
Pitching (Up/Down)
Radar Modes
Targeting
Reading the BattleGrid/Waypoints
Weapons Selection
Ejection
Jumpjets
...there's a bit that could be gone over to get players familiar with the basics.

All of it ultimately put to the test with an obstacle course
