#1 Know your maps
If you are getting ambushed by light mechs, figure out where you can place yourself so that you will spot any mech trying to flank you and your team. Never advance without a line of retreat, and keep a lookout at all times for enemies that may be moving in along said line. These are combat basics that most players simply do not exercise, and do not require a team to perform.
#2 Never be too far from a buddy, and never abandon your buddy
This tactic works for me even in PUGs so don't discredit it w/o trying it. It may seem cheap to a light mech pilot being ganged up on, but deep down, they know that is the thrill they are after in the first place. Be as cheap as you can be to kill light pilots, because they can and will tie you up for as long of a period of time as they can. So leg them if they are on the move, or core them if they are sitting still. War is dirty business.
#3 The most important: Keep Calm
Light pilots are the predators of mech pilots, and they sense hesitation and frustration in other pilots, and prey upon it. If you keep your head and use all at your disposal to combat light pilots, you will perform much better. Knowing the capabilities of different light mechs is important as well so that you can move to terrain that will work in your favor.
You have far more than just guns to combat other mechs, so start thinking outside the box and you will surprise yourself and others.

Trying to sound like the "Art of War"? This generalistic guidelines are as good against light as are against any other mech class, It doesn't make you perform specifically better against them. The solution is not as much on the mechwarrior side as is on the developers' side. If you are genuinely hitting something, the game should behave properly and mark those hits, and not like now that we have to resort to divination or streaks to have a chance
This absurd situation has lasted too long, and if this was magic the gathering, everybody would be getting 4 jenners in their decks, as the amount of damage they do on average is so ridiculously inflated thanks to their impunity shield, that all other choices are suboptimal.
The reason i don't play one is because I hate their impunity so much that I feel that If we keep fielding those things, all newbies would leave the game in anguish and frustration.

When a light starts circle-jerking, anyone outside the circle simply needs to park their mech and fire at the two points where the light is running almost directly at them or away from them, 1 or 2 salvos should do the trick if you can aim just the slightest.
When you are the one being circle jerked, wait for your team mates to do this, while continuing your job, all the while spinning your torso to absorb.
If you have no team mates... tough luck...

As opposed to criticizing someone's mech loadout, while you're on the losing team, and then disconnecting in the middle of a fight so you don't get killed? Classy.

The secret to killing lights is: 'Walk backwards'
They then spend more time in front of you as you're making them run in an ellipse. This means you get more time to target and lag lead them. I've killed lights with Gauss Rifles and AC20s doing this, but there is an element of luck/guesswork in working out how far to lead the shot.
Sometimes you won't kill them, but they don't like targets that can hit them, so they often run off.
