Glad I found this post, as I'm a recent Hunchie convert. Wish I'd chosen the 4G instead of the Cat as my founders mech! Absolutely love my 4SP which is running 4ML, Std 250, 2 SRM6 build. Will definitely be taking a look at the 2LPL 3MG build of the 4G :(

Totally agree Hauser, 4SP is very forgiving of newbie piloting errors – I am amazed at how long I can stay alive with my current driving skills :) I like to think I’m holding my own against other mediums (tho other HBK-4SP’s are a pain!!) and have learned patience not to go against heavies and assaults until my teammates have softened them up. I am really struggling with lights tho... I try to lead with the SRM6’s but rarely hit and trying to leg them with the 4Mlas just doesn’t seem to be effective. Any top tips on dealing with lights?

You will have to learn to lead with your missiles man.
Going for the legs with your lasers is a valid tactic, too.

C'mon, you can't just think because they're "light" they can knocked down with ease.

For 4SP, I'd say just not waste any SRM on them entirely (unless they're legged or overheated of course), and leg them with lasers. Takes ages, but all efforts count. Also AMS appears to be buffed lately, and since Lights tend to carry SSRM if possible, AMS could help reduce about 10% of incoming damage.

Helmstif - didn't mean to imply that at all, I would actually just like to hit lights occasionally... Was checking my tactics are good and, as expected, it's my execution that's the issue! Nearly got all my basic skill boosts now so that's helping with quicker turning etc. Thanks again for all the great info here on HBK's, should be starting on my 4J this weekend!

Don't bother with the legs unless you have a good shot. They are rather small so you won't be putting much damage on them while they're moving. Beyond that I don't have very specific advice. Don't fight alone. Make use of the terrain to cover yourself and force the lights into predictable paths for your srms.

I finally got 3 of my Hunchies with All Elite skills - next up, get a 4th to elite, and master all of them.

You do know that you need only three of them to master, right?

Yeah - but I tried other mechs and hunchies are just more fun. In somewhat related news my experiments with the 4G arn't going too well. I've tried Dual AC5, Triple AC2, 3MG, 2x UAC5, 2x PPC, 2x Large Laser, 2x Large Pulse laser and 2x ERLLaser and nothing works fantastically yet. Best setup so far is the Large pulses + 3x MG weirdly enough. Still not great - my other hunchies are outperforming it by far, but it's pretty fun running around with the pulses and then popping components with MG's. Pity they seem somewhat unreliable.

Ok, i finally manage to play in the 4P!

Still the build with 2 LLs in the arms, 260 Std Engine and as much medium lasers as would fit.
And i do REALLY well with it now.
Finally!

Here is my current HBK-4P. It does run a little hot but i like the speed. Had some spare 260's from my Catapults.

Just bought a HBK-4H. Pretty standard at the minute, trying to save up for DHS, and Ferro.

I just gave my 9-mediums 4P* a try again. It's glorious. Now that state roll-back has been implemented I can hit specific parts on a mech with ease.

*Also works with 260 and -1T AMS ammo, but I like my HBKs to have consistent handling.

I know!

I took a break from leveling my Trebuchets and went back to my Hunchies.... the 4P is easily my favourite now!
My performance has SKYROCKETED since the state rewind patch. It's insane how well I do in it.

EDIT: BTW, how the HELL did you fit in 2 LL and a bunch of MLAS with a 260 engine?!?!
Did you drop a bunch of heatsinks?

Yeah, it runs quite hot. Cooling effiency of 0.91....

But there are times when you KNOW that this shot will be your last on that opponent... so the overheating will pay-off.

I use it with 4 weapon groups, from what i only actually use 3.

1 - ALL M-Lasers
2 - Both Large Lasers
3 - All M-Lasers chain fired
4 - Alpha

I never used the 4th Button though ^^
With Alpine and everyone and there mother preferring a long-range fight now, i like to be able to contribute with my large lasers.
And when you do close in, all those M-Lasers to one part of the enemy mech.... yeah, it rocks

What do you think to this HBK-4H?

Im not 100%, at the minute i have this same build with a STD 200 engine and filled the rest with heatsinks. I really want more speed.

or this HBK-4H

Or this even... HBK-4H FF + STD 250 engine, full armour, 5ML + LB10-XAC ANNDD AMS...

Does this setup work or is it a glitch with smurfy?

Hi Mordynak,

i would prefer the AC/10 over the LBX AC/10 all the time, but that is only my opinion. I love dealing concentrated damage, not spread it all over the place.
With the UAC... i don't know, i never used it myself. It had an awfully high jamming rate at first, and that make me not even want to try it. Supposedly that has changed now and it even unjams automatically, but still... nah.
Other then that your builds look all really decent, a 250Std Engine is the best thing to do in a hunchback. (though my 4p runs with a 260).
I would pilot all those builds, if i could exchange the LBX against a normal AC :)

On a completely different note: i managed to master my first hunch. the 4J is all done :D

Cheers for the advice Ewigan.

Just setting it up now. (Got enough C-Bills for an engine) Only problem is if i fit a 250 engine i have to lower the armor way too much. I don't want to sacrifice firepower for speed at all, nor armour really. So im not sure what to do.

This is how it looks at the minute.
