I've read no melee right now so having it in the game would be a waste of a mech.

Exactly. With no melee at launch, no way they have any mechs that make its absence more noticeable.

Does this mean we'll see the Axeman too? That was around during the time of the Clan Invasion too, at least according to Battletech the Animated Series it was.

Canonically, the original AXM-1N Axman was introduced in 3045, while the AXM-2N Axman seen in the BattleTech cartoon was introduced in 3049.

-----

Also, for a slightly different write-up:

"Popular in Lyran service since its introduction in 3023, the Hatchetman has been designated as a priority for Federated Commonwealth units. 'Mechs have already begun to arrive, mostly with the new F-C regiments. Constuction has tripled since engineers converted the assembly line to production of the new HCT-5S, which incorporates a number of Star League systems.

The new model uses the efficient new Edasich Motors 180 XL engine, reducing weight to make room for more potent weapons. The Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannon replaces the older Defiance Killer AC/10, a trade common in many 'Mechs that carried a Class 10 autocannon. Three Defiance P5M Medium Pulse Lasers replace the two B3M models. The lighter engine allows Defiance Industries to use more armor, and the HCT-5S carries the new Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous Armor, increasing the Hatchetman's protection by almost 50 percent. Cellular Amunition Storage Equipment protects the autocannon shells from internal explosion."

I am going to name my Hatchetman the 'Slap Chop', with the tag line, 'Your going to love my nuts!'.

I thought the Devs said no hand to hand at launch? Unless they changed their minds, Id say its probably safe to say we should not see this mech at all at launch. On that note... if in some way hand to hand is now a go or will be added some time shortly after, I REALLY HOPE we get the Kurita version of the Hatchetman where the hatchet was scrapped and a sword was put in its place. Kurita viewed the hatchet as a barbaric weapon and so the sword was added to their Hatchetman mechs. The Kuritan Mechwarriors would not pilot a mech with a hatchet/axe as it was no honorable like the samurai sword. Just some history for all who did not know that ;)

Viable BattleMech-scale swords weren't developed by the DCMS until 3058, with BattleMech-scale vibroblades being developed in the following year (though not widely deployed until 3065).

Also, the samurai (albeit rarely) and some warrior-monks (specifically, the sohei and yamabushi) apparently did use a hatchet-like weapon called an ono, so it isn't wholly unthinkable that some DCMS MechWarriors could (and did) accept "converting" captured Hatchermen into "Onojin" (at least, until the BattleMech sword is invented)...

Not necessarily. I'm too lazy to try and find it, but a couple weeks ago, one of the Devs said that Randall Bills (who is responsible for these articles) is given free reign, and what is on the news feed doesn't relate to what is actually in the game. That said, it seems a few things in the newsfeed, like dropships, will be in the game.

This is a weird one ... I love the hatchetman ...always have ...its even on my banner ...

But to have that hatchet as ornamental is ... wrong.

Firstly it takes up crit slots and on top of that weighs quiet a lot.

So if they introduce the Hatchetman ... then for me they should also include melee combat.

It'll be really, really interesting to see if melee mechs make their way into our little realm here. Can't ever recall any in any previous licenced games. Seen plenty in mods though.
