From Ask the Devs 8

Quote

Q: What is being done to combat issues where mechs become obsolete - for example in World of Tanks where you have rank 1 to 10 of tanks but really only ranks 8-10 are played and lower tanks are just seen as fodder. Is that a concern? [Trystane]

A: A very big concern for us was that Lighter 'Mechs would perform poorly against larger ones, and what we've done is make it so that each tier is equal to every other tier of 'Mechs - in this case, Light 'Mechs such as the Jenner pose a large risk to Atlas', and Hunchbacks are just as deadly as Catapults. You'll never run into a situation where you 'cannot damage' an opponent (other than losing all your weapons of course.) [GARTH]

ETA: I know this is not new, I've been saying it for months myself. But a lot people keep asking and comparing to WoT that the devs had to answer it again in the latest ask the devs thread. I thought I'd paint a big flashing sign for the unobservant.

Edit 2: I also don't mean that an atlas and a jenner can stand in front of each other and pound each other and the Jenner can win. I understand that. I'm just quoting what the devs said. A light mech is not useless against a heavy or assault. It can still do damage. That's all.

I saw in a video where they said a medium laser on a light mech is as powerful as a medium laser on an assault mech, with that said if the assault is all out of ammo for other weapons and only has 2 medium lasers left and is facing a light mech with 2 medium lasers then the only thing thats seperates them is the amount of armor they each carry, in this situation the light mech may have the advantage due to its speed

They have been saying this for months. All weight classes are viable, and lights can kill Assaults (and vice versa)

This is not new.

We have known that the damage system will allow all classes of mech to hurt all classes for a long time now.

This is not WoT

I know. Yet people seem to not be hearing it. I figured a nice juicy quote would help draw attention to it. They did have to answer it again in that ask the devs :/

I can't stand WoT for that reason. I'm useless in that game.

As it should be. Emphasis on keyword can.

I know it's not new, I'm bringing it up for the benefit of others.

To temper this with actual logic:

It'll still require you to play to your strengths. A Jenner isn't going to go toe-to-toe with an assualt/heavy and win. You'll need to be flanking, hitting weak spots. Harassing and moving off at speed before they can hit any heavy return fire.

The point is, you *can* hurt them. Which is a big plus over the way Light tanks work in WoT.

All it means is that all weapons will do the same damage on all mechs. There will not be a tiered system where an assault's medium laser does 4x more damage than a light's medium laser.

Unless the assault pilot is vastly outclassed skill-wise, the assault will always win.

I wouldn't say 'vastly' but yeah, that's the general gist of things.

All the differences between the classes are there. That will not stop some players for refusing to see or employ them. "The mech is broken, why should my Jenner always have to be behind an atlas to kill it, why can't I stand toe to toe and beat him with my uberness?" Mechs may be equal per tier now, but players will not be, yet they will demand it.

someone should say light tanks in WOT a few more times. i dont think the point has been made yet

btw if you can't kill a heavy with a light in WOT its because you're terrible, not because the game is.

I liked this video:

The ability of fast light 'mechs to flank heavier units is pretty impressive, even just comparing the movement of a Jenner to a Hunchie, much less a 54kph assault chassis.

The Devs are trying to design a game where the outcome of a fight is not determined predominantly by weight class.

I love their intent, but that doesn't mean I'm expecting Jenners to go around knocking down Atlases.

I'll be honest, this is common sense to anyone who hasn't played WoT. I know I haven't, and hearing people talk about how low level(aka new player starting tanks) can't even damage high level tanks begs a big "***?" from me. That sounds like just plain horrible game design, imo, and I don't know why everyone assumes MWO will copy it. None of the past MW games used this broken mechanic, as far as I can remember.

One would think that scouts playing their role are being fairly aggressive in spotting targets and harassing.

Many of the lighter mechs are likely mashed metal by the time their heavier opponents are running out of ammo.

People like to compare their odds against heavier opponents as if their scout mech is completely unscathed with full ammo. Is that REALLY a likely comparison for the battlefield and your odds 1V1 against behemoths?

You take leg damage, you aren't making attack runs to attract attention.

You take a few incoming shots getting behind enemy lines and you are playing for time before you get tagged and ripped apart, hoping you have back up that can take the heat off of you.

Playing against PUGS is one thing, but attempting to be an ace scout pilot attacking the backs of larger mechs gets harder when they have people looking out for you and chasing you down, stepping on you with glee.

People who rejoice in actually downing larger mechs with a light or medium are usually cherry picking holed mechs, teaming up, rarely whittling them down on their own.

It happens, but not often.

It all comes down to several things. What light mech is fighting the atlas? Is it able to stay behind it due to the atlases sluggish turning. Also you have to account for piloting too will they hit or miss their shots. Being a light mech they would just hit an run on the atlas and chip it away. And yes a weapon of th same size is always the same regardless who carries it. Take MW4 for example you could mount 2 large lasers on a cougar and it would put a much hurt on through attrition as a assault mech. Yes it cant brawl so it weaves in and out between shots.

If the weapon hits it will do damage, does not matter if its a machine gun or AC20, this fact has not changed in almost three decades. Hitting the target and not getting killed in the process though that, is a matter of skill, luck and intelligent play on the part of all the pilots involved.
