The next hero mech after the CTF-IM should probably be another canon one. After that?

Why not have the community design (by popular vote) some of the key aspects of the next Hero Mech. Which chassis? Which paint job?

Hardpoints is clearly a more difficult issue, but some user input would be nice (such as voting for one of a small selection of dev-designed hardpoint layouts)

I like this idea. Maybe have a poll for what chassis to base it off of, it's speed (fast, quick, average, slow so that way it's relative to the winning chassis's weight), primary weapons, focus towards juggernaut/hit and run/scout/brawler/etc.
Of course, something so slapdash would probably result in a mech coming out that tries to simulate a Charger, Urbanmech, or Mad Cat.

But either way, I like the concept where the highest voted mech idea would win.

Yeah, it would be polls. And you'd do it in steps, and the Devs have veto.

Probably go weight class - chassis - role - primary weapon - paintjob

Well I think the story telling plays a big part. Yet I suppose this is a game before a story, and those kinds of votes would help us feel more like we were participating in its design.

Would we want to stick with just the mechs that are already in game or branch out and see if the devs would add the base model and hero mech in an upcoming patch. I for one would love to have an Orion. A hero version would be the one Theodore Kurita used till it got shot up on Marfik. That mech also has the benefit of being tied to Aleksandr Kerensky.

I'd love a hunchback with a ballistic slot in the head for a funny build.

After all, the only head slot missing is the ballistic.

Seeing that we currently have a medium and a heavy hero mech, that would logically leave a light or assault for the next one. If we're going with canon this is what we have under the current year and tech with the 5 mechs we have to choose from:

Commando:
None - No clan tech, small cockpits, or SSRM4's yet.

Jenner:
Grace - 2 Med Lasers, 1 Narc
Samuli - 4 Med Lasers, 1 LRM15

Raven:
None - No canon custom variants

Awesome:
AWS-9Ma - 3 ER PPCs, Sm Laser, 2 SSRM2, ECM, Command Console

Atlas:
Samsonov - 2 PPC, AC/20
Danielle - AC/20, LRM20, 6 Med Lasers

Looking at the slot designations the way MWO hardpoints work, the Jenners are nothing different from what we already have or are worse, the Awesome has ECM over all the others, The Atlas Samsonov is just lacking hardpoints with Danielle having a plethora of energy slots. Logically this would leave either the AWS-9Ma or the Atlas Danielle as the next choice for a canon hero mech and my money would be on Danielle because the forums would be in an uproar having an 84kph assault mech with ECM.

* Edit: corrected "different"
* Edit 2: Removed rear firing lasers from the Danielle.

They could do the story Mad Libs style, and we could vote on the best improvised responses to include

The Samuli actually has it's LRM on one of the arms I believe, which could add an interesting take on Jenner builds.

What about adding hero mech that are upgrades to current mech we have now?

We have the Dragon... add the Grand Dragon as a Hero Mech design.
We are getting the Spider... add the Venom as its Hero mech upgrade. (the one thing about the venom is) its upgrade makes it 35 tons instead of the base 30 tons of the Spider and it could be a stand alone mech by itself as well.

Can't count the other confirmed but unreleased mechs until they are actually released. We won't be seeing the hero variants before the standard variants.

Why not run it as a contest?

Players would submit a Entry that would include the mech's proposed loadout, a short write-up on it's background, and maybe some artwork.

Devs screen entries and/or nominate finalists which are then voted on by the community at large. Winner gets thier mech and it's backstory included in the game.

I've been pushing for the Danielle Atlas whenever I can, that is a must have for just about any Atlas pilot.

A Grand Dragon or Caesar would be really cool, however we just got the Ilya Muromet, so a Caesar seems less likely.

As for a Community made mech, I'd love to see a Cicada Hero Mech, preferably with a couple of Missile slots.

Great idea Redshift2k5!

I love to see a submission for stories about the 'mech too. There's lots of places for comminuty input if you want it. You could also have people vote on the mech and drop teaser stories about the candidates. Even minor characters exist out there that can be used too just check the TROs for inspiration.

I would personally be extremely worried on putting the atlas danielle in game. at 9 arm crits, and 3 laser hard points per arm, you could actually run 8 large lasers, or potentially 8 ppcs. that would HURT...

or imagine an atlas with gauss, 2 srm 6 and 8 medium lasers, 270 meter death machine indeed... 40 damage alpha from the med lasers, 30 from from the srm2, and 15 from the gauss. 85 point alpha on an atlas, which can actually mount enough heatsinks to use such an arsenal. that is for all intents and purposes the same firepower as a hunchback 4g with a gauss instead of ac/20 and its head laser removed, plus a 4sp hunchback with its head small laser upgraded to a medium.

If anybody remembers the Battletech TCG its full of hero mechs with some of the weaponry listed. All that leaves is for people to research the back story of the character listed and fill in the gaps on the exact load-out, and the crits.
