On a different note... according to lore, the inner sphere gets their butts handed to them by the overpowering better piloting of the clans. I do NOT look forward to even MORE whing than we already hear about Gausscats and Streakcats.

Oh, I know this one, it was part of the Know Your Enemy lectures at Proserpina U. There was an old history of the Amaris War, professor out of Lancaster University if my memory suits, published in the early 2800s. In the afterward there’s a brief mention, anecdotal at best, of an interview where Kerensky is asked about the war, and hints at his plans for Operation Exodus. Supposedly, he mentions the formation of military families based around tactical ideals - calling them 'clans'. No evidence exists that this interview ever happened, and the library where most of the evidence this book references were stored was destroyed when the Capellans hit the planet about a century ago.
But ever since then, conspiracy theorists have waved Kerensky's Clans around with the fervor of a mad monk wandering out of the deserts of Alshain with 'revelations'. Oh, the Clans are coming, they'll usher in a new era of prosperity. Oh, the Clans are coming, lock your doors at night, or Arwan's Cauldronborn are gonna get you!
Children's stories for ancient Earth, and wishful thinking from rabble-rousers. Anyone with any education in the Draconis Combine knows these are mere stories, any anyone with what passes for education in the lower Houses knows it, too. At best this fuss coreward is some half-dozen world Periphery duchy that finally scraped up enough tanks and infantry, stuffed them into a dropship, got their hands on a working jumpship, and settled Obie and Ryan. I don’t believe it (all three of those things had to happen? How far from Occam's Razor is that?). Neither should anyone else who knows the Lryans for the deceitful and bourgeois robber-barons they are. This is a Commonweath trick, backed by their allies on New Avalon. But its certainly not Kerensky.
剣光
P.S. and now that I'm thinking on it, I recall that even the raid on Lancaster is part of the Clan lore. It was hit by a merc unit, something Dracons, one of the units that didnt sign on for the Exodus, and that the raid was specifically for the destruction of evidence of the Clans. Right, because Laio is going to lanch a deep penetrating raid into Commonweath space to burn a few moldy documents.

The near-unimaginable conflict of the initial Clan invasion came at a time
when the Inner Sphere was perched on the edge of another round of internecine Succession Wars. Each of the five realms had recovered some measure of
advanced technology from the Helm memory core, and each believed it had
gained an advantage over the other. Three hundred years of experience were cast
aside in favor of new weapons, new BattleMechs, and the lightning warfare of the
Fourth Succession War.
The combat that came, of course, proved to every Inner Sphere leader
that the advantage lay not with them, but with the invaders from beyond the
Periphery’s borders.
signs and Portents
The signs of the coming invasion were there for us to see. One can’t help
but marvel at our hubris. The silence that echoed from the Periphery was not
the silence of the cowed and the broken, but the silence of the coming night.
Hauptmann General Frederic Anderson was quoted in February 3050 saying
“Damn straight it’s quiet out there. Those pirates know damned well not to mess
with us anymore.” A month later, Anderson was dead and the survivors of his
Eighth Arcturan Guards were desperately falling back to Somerset. At the dawn
of what would become known as the Clan Invasion only the Free Rasalhague
Republic was taking the Periphery pirate threat with any kind of seriousness. Had
the greater nations of the Inner Sphere not been so dismissive of the KungsArmé’s
efforts, we might well have had more warning of the coming storm.
invasion Begins
While March 3050 is considered by most the opening of the Clans’ invasion
the opening shots were fired eight months earlier. Sweeping through the pirate
nations of the coreward Periphery, the invading Clans met little to no appreciable
opposition. Their superior technology and strict discipline overwhelmed one
world after another with little or no resistance.
It was during these initial attacks that Phelan Kell, son of Kell Hounds founder
Morgan Kell, was captured by Clan Wolf. Hunting pirates on the barren world
known as The Rock, the Kell Hounds ran headlong into the elite warriors of what
we would later learn to be Clan Wolf’s Golden Keshik. Analogous to an Inner Sphere
command company, those warriors easily destroyed the veteran Kell Hound battalion, despite having already seen heavy combat against the pirate forces.
Having conquered the Periphery with no real challenge the Clans were
able to strike in force in March 3050. Their first wave of attacks steamrolled over
Draconis Combine, Free Rasalhague Republic and the Lyran worlds of the Federated
Commonwealth. More than thirty worlds fell in the first month of the invasion,
destroying several highly-skilled units. The Smoke Jaguars captured the son of thenGunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita, and the Jade Falcons nearly did the same to Victor
Steiner Davion (heir to the combined throne of the Federated Commonwealth) on
the bleak world of Trell I. With technologically-superior BattleMechs and strange
armored infantry known as Toads, some panicked survivors claimed aliens had come
from the deep to steal our very souls. It would be months before the identity of our
invaders was fully known—long months of wild speculation, from alien invaders to
a secret coalition of pirates lead by Rim Worlds descendants. The reality was no less
disturbing then the wildest speculations: Kerensky and Star League Defense Force
had returned.

And to add on to what others have said - I know the basic timeline, and of course, know whats coming (though I resolutly refuse to accept The Dark Ages, because I think its stupid). But I cant quote verse and chapter - I rely on others for that:
sarna.net
So my advice to you is either look it up, or simply sit back and enjoy the story as it unfolds. I'd chose the later if I were in your boots - but I like a good surprise, and I like the way the world feels just before a really big storm is about to hit.

Thanks for the tips, you and others who have replied. However it's not like I'm totally unaware that there's supposed to be a Clan invasion sometime around March - it's impossible to read these forums without knowing that already. And I know very roughly what the Clans are, or at least what that means in terms of Mechs (I have played BT before, just never been into the lore). So being "surprised" is not really possible
However, if the developers are trying to tell a story here, I'm just saying that for those of us who don't already know the vast tomes of background information, it's not engaging at all. It's like making a movie that's composed entirely of references to other movies, which doesn't make any sense if you haven't seen all the other movies. There's no actual content other than references to extant material. It doesn't motivate me to seek out those references, as there's no hook in the first place.
If that's NOT the point, and the objective of these news flashes is simply to titillate those in the know, then I suppose what they're doing suits their purposes - I'll just go back to ignoring them for the most part
(You might ask, "well why did you bother even coming into this thread?" I read it because it was an "announcement" that wasn't titled 'ISN News Flash'...)

Ah, yes, ‘Clans’. The supposed children of Kerensky's Exodus allegedly waiting beyond the Periphery. We have dismissed this claim.
There is no proof to indicate that is anything more than another pirate raid, or a simple communications error. I already have specialists looking into these rumors, so we can show those who are overly paranoid that this is simply an interesting series of coincidences.
Rumors of hordes of pilots bearing the surnames of SLDF heroes, including their leader, Alexander Kerensky, are totally baseless and devoid of fact. We've said it before and will say it again: Kerensky is dead. Those noble fools who followed him are dead. He lead his troops on a death march past every habitable planet ComStar has seen along his route. Even if he did manage to make it to a habitable planet, they didn't bring near enough in the way of colonization supplies. Even a single moisture condenser is worth infinitely more to a settler than a pristine Atlas II. Kerensky misled his people, and the odds of them surviving, let alone surviving with any real space-travel capabilities or military might.
After all, look at the First Succession War! Fools tried to claim the power vacuum left by the disappearance of the SLDF and almost broke our ability to survive in this galaxy! When Kerensky dies, who will replace him? His moronic son, Nicolas?
Also, there are no 'Tetatae'. There are no 'elite man-bird-robot hybrids' that have taken over House Liao. They most definitely have not displaced the nominal citizens of the Capellan Confederation. It is utterly foolish to assume that they have usurped power from the Chancellor and his lackeys and instated their own leaders.
If anything, it's far more likely that Kerensky's Exodus was merely a ruse, to cover for the SLDF secretly traveling spin-ward, rather than core-ward. This also neatly explains the recent instabilities shown in Liao leadership and erratic communications from their HPG grid: the SLDF survivors have activated their sleeper cells and are now trying to wrest control of a great house from those who they consider to have mismanaged it over the past four wars.
Hallowed is the Word of Lowtax.

I honestly think that the biggest mistake for MWO will be to introduce clan battlemechs so quickly to this game. the awesome roll warfare that we currently enjoy will get dashed to ribbons when you can pilot 75 ton heavy mechs that cruise at a nice 90kph all day.
nothing like seeing teams of 8 TIMBER WOLVES. (not Madcats you schmucks.)
but all that aside.
in the blood of Kerensky novels it's not actually till 3051 that innerphere pilots actually get and use clan / clan equivalent tech. SO while maybe we'll see some dev controlled clan mechs. or maybe even some bot controlled clan mechs you wont be getting no grubby fingers on any clan tech till late next year or even middle of 2014.
enjoy that.

If criminal syndicates are collapsing due to empty leadership, then who is taking over? What activities are they engaged in?
Has there been a rise in Inner Sphere assasinations lately in the underworld? Is somebody just moving in on their turf, or is it just a Periphery thing?
Among all these rumours, I haven't heard anything about Battlemechs being used. Are there any? If so, is this another Lostech stash that someone has found, or is a house selling mechs to them?
