My guess, if it's anything like WoT you can purchase more room in your mechbay as you earn c-bills, and after that you can own as many mechs as there are in game inculding variants.

^TLDR: Unconfirmed, many guess 4.
Personally, I hope for... 6? 4 would give just 1 mech in each class, which isn't a lot of variety. That could be the Devs intention though for folks to cheaply upgrade to 8 or so mechs as a $5-$10 option, which is reasonable and most/many would pay

IGN video:
Unlike WOT, It looks each slot = configuration/loadout. Rather than a slot = mech/tank. Let me explain.
In the current build he pays for everything, base chassis, weapons. He is not unlocking them but buying them.
In Wot once you research and purchase a weapon, if it can be used on other tanks, all it takes is equipping it because it belongs to you already.
In this picture you see a "Hammer" and "Hammer 2", same base mech having to be purchased for each slot, then equipped, again purchasing the weapons, even duplicate types you've purchased previously.
That is the way to keep separate load outs of the same mech. So the 4 slots aren't base mechs, but configurations, they could all be the same base mech, purchased separately, filling up all free slots I suppose. Currently, if you have one mech and want to change the loadout, you have to buy it. What happens to the old stuff, in the video seems to disappear into the nether regions. There is no unload/storage that I saw. Although everything will need repairing, ofcourse. As it is, You can either use 1 slot for a base mech, make a purchase everytime you want to change a loadout, or purchase a slot and keep a second type of loadout, switching between without having to repurchase weapons, just repair.

It's really kind of weird the way they have it. (I know it's not finished to all you eager beavers).
Hopefully they continue to tweak it in a more player friendly direction, and even take into account some of the loadout ideas Tribes:Ascend came out with yesterday.
For an early look the mechlab is great (I was really wishing for animated transformations via robots ie Iron Man), only time will tell how many slots/unlocked mechs the game will ship with, we probably will not actually REALLY know until it is done. Tribes shipped with unlocking 1 unit in all base variant classes, a light, medium, heavy. With a couple extra slots (slot = mech) would be good, one can hope.

Speech!!!!
Yeah, that's what I meant without scaring the guy with a lecture.
Although I suppose I could have been a little bit more detailed.
Basically from what I see, you buy a mech and it takes one slot. Then you buy the same mech but a different variant that takes another slot. Maybe there's a mech bin we don't see where you place variants/mechs not being used.

But only after buying extra slots for them with real money. You'll probably get 4 for free so you can participate in normal battles and the 3 mech 'garage battle' without having to pay.

This game looks like it could be really fun. Is it the game I have been waiting for since I lovingly painted a regeiment of lead minatures for Battletech? Man I hope so.

Well, I wasn't talking to him, my issue is far larger than something NO ONE WILL KNOW AN ANSWER TOO UNTIL THE DEVS THEMSELVES DECIDE. I thought as someone who understood the WOT system, you could appreciate my comments. Actually, I probably needed a couple more paragraphs to clarify how big a deal it may be if the continue on that course, thankfully I didn't waste the text. Mech's are already going to cost 10,000,000 (I don't think you realize that will take real long for free). Given that, I wouldn't want to have to buy a "duplicate" chassis per slot, I want to research it/buy it once and have it available. I just wanted to put the concern out there, more important than scaring someone with a "speech" they can ignore.
Sorry to the OP if it scared you.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense. I would be surprised it is otherwise. From the picture we have a Hunchback, Atlas , and a Hunchback 2, really does look like four slots, and would bet could by as many more slots as you want.
Looks very similar to World of tanks in this regard.

Of course people.
You can buy as many slots as you have money, allowing you to have as many mechs as they ever make in the next 10 years. Like all the similar, even non similar, f2p games.
The developers do have to eat somehow.

4 mechs if you don't want to pay. 7 mechs if you do. So long as these people don't get 7 lives in Dropship Mode, I don't see anything wrong with this.

You may have missed the newer picture from Gamespy which had 5 slots, they dynamically are added graphically as you would fill the first existing slots, and would be purchasable.

They invented/discovered these mouse click-able arrow things that can scroll through slots, see the places they can fit.

I do appreciate what you have to say, and I didn't mean to insult, or demean anything you have to say, if that's how it seemed to you, then I'm sorry. But I don't know WoT all that well, I have all of 4 days play experience in it and that was 4 months ago.
I see your point however. When I said like WoT I didn't mean exactly like world of tanks, that would be awful. By purchase I meant with ingame c-bills, not real cash. Or it might be that the slots increase as you buy a mech, for free, once the four original slots are used up.
I have faith in the devs to do things right, that'll take into account and avoid certain aspects of other similarish games out there.

That's a definite possibility, making it about chassis purchases alone. Somewhere in there they may have cash only purchases, like WOT does with slots, we just don't know.

Hmm I dunno, without the customers and fans voicing standards that they believe should be reached/maintained, faith alone has proven people do little more than they have to. I don't know PGI at all, I'm just saying that speaking up when there is time for change is the only time it probably isn't a waste of breath for me.
P.S. Your statement wasn't insulting as it hit me as dismissive, takes time to write something worth reading, you were in your rights though.

That's good. Voice your opinion. The devs from my point of view have shown themselves to be really devoted to the player base. They're always prowling the forums and seeing what people are saying. The good, bad and very nasty. I have "faith" in them, they will take as much into account as they can, including customer opinions. And nothing is set in stone yet, and once the game ius released they can do major overhauls because a game like this is a WIP, even after the offical stable release, and the devs have stated as much.
My moto is trust till you have a reason not to trust. So far, what I've seen I like [for a guy who's mad about no SP], I think they're doing and will do in the future an admirable job.

It was long, and didn't want to quote the whole thing, so I removed it for conviences sake, if anyone wanted to know what I was quoting the would know easily. Also it's probably a discussion more suited to the "suggestions" part of the forum.
