Played tabletop MW way back in the day and the first 2 Computer games. Just downloaded yesterday and I have to say it's very brutal, but extremely fun.

Initial thoughts:
  • Started off using a joystick, but that didn't last long as I has serious issues being able to go where I wanted to. Switch to keyboard/mouse and it was much better.
  • Learned Faster is not always better when you are learning to control your Mech. So fast, light Mechs are off the table for now.
  • Still haven't gotten the hang of missiles or targeting.
  • I love the complexity of the game. It's more than just point and shoot!
  • Dying is not a bad thing. I'm still learning and I still make some cash..
  • Don't shoot friends, it's bad, mmmmmkay..
  • Lastly, I'm living up to my handle more than I'd like. LOL!

Things to do
  • Get voice chat setup.
  • Practice manuevering.
  • Never give up.

So if you see a Mech pilot wandering aimlessly and firing wildly, it just might be me. So be gentle and if you are an ally it might be best to not walk in front of me, at least till I get the fire control skills down. :)

Sounds like you're enjoying the harsh end of the learning curve! If you have any specific questions after you've checked out the excellent tutorials videos in the Media section and had a look at the general guides in the forum, feel free to ask, some of the game mechanics are quite subtle.

Welcome to MWO. I look forward to seeing you online. Might be keeping you in front of me, or perhaps observing from behind some cover... :)

Great post! And good on ya for learning your lessons. I had the hardest time with lights starting out.
I put them off after trying them for a few weeks.

Definitely hop on a teamspeak as soon as you feel comfortable, it makes a lot of difference even if its still with random people!

A warm welcome to you, PanicFire.
Everyone in here has started someday and I never met anyone who piloted his mech perfect the first day.
At the beginning it seems hard to have an eye on every function and option.
Weapongrouping, heatmanagment, setup, maneuvering, skilling and so on. But after several days you will get used to it.
And I can tell you, after you have mastered your first mech, the fun will only get more and more and more. Just when you are on the finetuning of your skills, bring your aim to a skill where you change it from enemy 'mech to enemy 'mech.
I have a great time playing this game and I don't give a **** on the people here whining about some minor issues or some "unbalancing".
Find your way in the game and I can assure you, here are many very good players in the community who will assist and help you.

Greetings so far and maybe we will meet on the battlefield. I will have a look for some "anti-aircraft" or "anti-mule" -firing. :)

You've nailed it...you can still have great fun learning a challenging game and getting killed plenty (and messy).
I agree completely with just getting on teamspeak and joining a few drops...I was hooked the moment I first started using teamwork.
Good luck, sir!

Welcome aboard Panicfire.
Some links to guides have been posted I'm aware, but these tidbits i find imperative to know and annoyingly hard to discover intentionally.

Important tidbits:

LRMS dont do anything under 180m range.

When you score a hit, your torso reticule turns red, use this to determine if your weapons are hitting the enemy mech as intended. (Light mechs have "lag shield" sometimes, meaning you gotta lead your shots, LRM targets will seek cover and you might waste missiles even if you keep the lock-on thanks to a perceptive friend.)

Press "backspace" to switch a weapon group to chain-fire, this will help manage your heat ALOT.

Welcome! Glad to see you enjoying the game...

Be sure to check out the training grounds if you haven't already. Some useful info and videos in there, I recommend you watch them if you have the time.

Think I've watched all of them. But I will double check.

My 15/yo son is interested in the game too. Looks like I will have to load it up on the laptop and hope it can run it smoothly. I'm guessing he will tear my Mechs apart. Darn this old foggie reflexes.

^^ From Serenity, when the Operative panics. Makes me laugh my head off every time, and I chuckle whenever a drop commander goes into panic mode in MWO when they get all confident about stomping a Jenner and then a lance of Atlases crests the ridge :P

Yes I learned about chain-fire and like it a lot. It did help quite a bit.

Welcome aboard! Hopefully I'll see you on the field soon. In the mean time, DEFINITELY get into a Team Speak server the live voice chat helps so much both from a game-play fun experience and to help you learn. Team mates watching you can tell help teach you as you make mistakes and so on.
Secondly, consider swinging by www.house-marik.net we're a large and mature Marik community with a large TS3 and if you hop on by we'll be happy to help!

Welcome to the game! You're going into this with exactly the right attitude. The best thing for you right now is to just keep practicing.

When you are not playing the game, read through all the pinned guides here:
http://mwomercs.com/...rum/95-general/

A lot of that information can only be found in the forums and not the game itself.

See you on the battlefield!
