Mech Of The Week Challenge 5: Close And Personal
#1
Posted 01 December 2012 - 12:38 AM
The Mech should fit in with the theme, or be related in some way through either the visual design or the employment on the battlefield. If you have an idea for a theme you'd like to see please send it to me in a private message.
The Mech should be something you draw specifically for the challenge, not something you already had lying around.
Art can be 2D, 3D, in any medium you prefer. They can be rough sketches, vector line art, full color, what have you. ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME!!!
WIP shots are allowed, but please keep the thread clean and only poster another WIP if you have made significant progress.
This week's challenge: Close and Personal. Your mech must impliment one or more melee weapons in the construction. It can be any weight class. The melee weapon can be held in the mech's hand, or built into the mech's chassis

Put more time into it this time than the SuperCommando
even took a few minutes to write some fluff and make sure the build worked
Swooping Crane SWC-X0
Spawned in the research industry of house Liao at the beginning of the year 3050, this mech was intended as a proof of the house's ability to produce and utilize advanced technology recovered from the Helm memory core. In this respect, it was successful, however the design never had more than one prototype produced and even production of this prototype was deemed an enormous debacle.
The design called for an 80 ton chassis, with a massive 320 XL Fusion powerplant cooled by 10 Double Heat Sinks, protected by 12.5 tons of Ferro Fibrous armor, and equipped with 2 advanced UAC 5 auto cannons with a ton of ammo each, 2 Medium Pulse lasers, a TAG system, a NARC launcher with 1 ton of ammo, an ECM suite and a Beagle Active Probe. To raise the stakes, it received an experimental 'battering ram' planted squarely in the center torso, however it proved so massive that it took up space in the head, left, and right torso of the mech. Finally, 4 jump jets allowed the mech an impressive 120 meters of jumping distance. All of this came with an astounding price tag of 20 million c-bills just to get it running.
Topping off these immense hurdles, the design was nearly impossible to maintain as it was packed completely full of equipment, affording the techs who worked on it no room for error and no extra space to work with, leading to immense maintenance times and difficulty. While test runs of the prototype yielded no significant flaws in performance, the project was ultimately scrapped due the sheer impracticality of such an expensive and hard to maintain design, however it remains on display at the museum of Liao military history as a tribute to and example of their technical capability.

(the battering ram is a made up piece of equipment, 5 tons and 5 crits as per a hatchet that hits for 16 points of damage, but can only be used while ramming an opponent instead of swung like a normal melee weapon. I spread the crits out among the torso/head areas as it is the only way to make the concept work.)

If you head over to Sarna, there is a category within "Battlemechs" that shows all of the meleee weapon equipped mechs. There are quite a few, although I don't really care for most. My plan is to draw a Commando that has ripped a fire hydrant and some of the accompanying water main out of the ground, and is using it like a mace.

So existing chasis only? Are these challenges weekly?

And Bishop I'm right there with you, this is finals week for me so I may not even end up being able to complete my own challenge.

Ah, this is great. Sticking to reference material has never really worked for me. Thanks for the clarification.
Also, my entry is going to be late too, as I managed to merge my reference layer on top of my drawing
(50% of drawing lost >_>)

OK, I decided to do a little inking-in since it's sort of comic-ish rather than a true careful sketch. Ink is an interesting medium, I see why you guys use it... makes things look better! I think I still prefer pencil, but I might find a use for my fountain pen (did this with a Cross ATX) more often.
Here it is, the fastest sketch since the Swamp Beetle MK I:
Commandos are HARD to draw! Well, the head is, anyway. The rest sort of drew itself.

Introducing the 45 ton Bellringer
The melee weapon is a hydraulic piston assembly built into the right arm, complete with vent and supply tanks. once pressurized it can be released to slam an enemy mech with a hardened tungsten bolt capable of crushing armor and internals, ruining limbs and shattering cockpits.
In addition the mech supports:
1 SRM 6
2 Medium Pulse Lasers
1 ER Large Laser
Jump Jets and a MASC for getting close enough to use the tungsten bolt.

Without further introduce, HatchetCat. The team of engineers had a time of their life building a working pair of hatchets to this Catapult. However in the initial testing phase, one fatal error was discovered: Having too long angle of chop ends the catapults walking prematurely.
Basicly the idea came out from the hatchet that Scarabus seems to be having built into its right hand(?). Now! Back to week 6 challenge.
edit: You cannot believe the hell a man has gone through with the mechs right leg. Oh dear god the amount of times I had to redo it.

Many tech in life fail to excel and fill its purpose the way it was ment to be. Take Bachem Ba 349 for example. Bachem was the plane I was about to use in the week 6 challenge but found another pristine aircraft
