What are the benefits/detriments?
What is my first step?
I'm a fairly new player, but have managed to make a decent amount of cbills in pugs, but would actually like to do more than grind. I have a yen-lo, aws-9m, hbk-4p, as7-k, and cplt-c4 in my lab, all modified (still haven't found the mech I like the best, but leaning towards yen-lo and awesome).
any thoughts?

Well, depends on what you're looking for in a company, but, you might want to check ours out.

We're a merc company with a very active membership. More importantly, lots of vets and military in the company. We don't do drama and we understand that real life comes first. Our website is http://www.the-bwc.com/ if you want to take a look.
You'll find we're a lot of fun to work with and fun to drop with.
In terms of benefits/detriments, that's up to you really. You, as a player, need to find the kind of group that appeals to you most. That includes the general atmosphere, the players in the company and your wants/desires as a player.
As to your first step, I would start looking around at the various companies that are hiring (like ours) and see who or what appeals to you best. As for my own two cents, I realized that even though I like the FRR, I like money and freedom more. So, after consideration, I started looking for a good merc group. I'm really happy with the BWC. Come check us out.

The above-noted thread is a good way to 'window shop' various corps who may be looking for new recruits. If you're so inclined, check our Der Windhund - The Greyhounds. We're always looking for new pilots!

The Dev blogs have all the information that we know of about the future of the game. I suggest you read Dev Blog 1 as it describes the differences of joining a House a Merc Corp, and being a Lone Wolf.
Check out the Hiring Hall and fill out an application there. That is really the best way to find a Merc Corp or House group since they will be contacting you if you fit their requirements.
