(10 May 3049)

Apologies for the dry spell since last my kernels o’ wisdom dropped in your laps, gents. But if I ever find the sucker who left that bug on my ‘puter and crashed my system, he’s gonna be talking with my fist in his mouth. Shrug…them’s the breaks.

So I just saw the feed surrounding the kerfuffle of some hand-wringers trying to browbeat the War College of Goshen over their live-fire range. Are ya kidding?! Really? What do they think the college is about? Underwater basket weaving?! After all, gents, it does have “war” in its name.

Now you wanna be against war? I got no problems with that. Any soldier worth his salt would tell ya he’d rather be home with his kid on his knee, only worrying about the nuclear-poop-filled diaper he’s trying to avoid changin’. So if you’re against war on principle, I respect ya.

But this?! Being okay with war, but hand-wringin’ over how dangerous it is to train a soldier and do it right? Sure, Goshen isn’t the NAIS or the Robison Battle Academy…though that’s because they’re not pet schools of a blue-blood dripping with C-bills. But they’re still one of the best-kept secrets of the FedRats and I’d be wary of any warrior sportin’ that crest.

So they’re shooting live rounds? Who cares?! How many wet-behind-the-ears cadets have we all put into the ground on forgotten worlds, gents? How many because they weren’t as prepared as the Goshen are trying to make ‘em.

I say pull out yer head, shut up, and realize they’re trying to prep your sons and daughters for the hell o’ battle before a gauss round finds their cockpit.

Keep it locked and loaded, gents.

Live fire is the way to go! When you know you can get hurt, you tend to perform better then in a safe cushioned simpod.

Courage is fear contained by self discipline. The best self discipline comes from training under live fire.

I never understood this. Are they firing live rounds at the cadets, or are the cadets firing live rounds at something else? There's not much else to prepare for if you're dead in training. What's wrong with rubber bullets? It can still kill students if you need to make them be wary of death, and no sane person would want to be shot by one because of the pain.

the slug (or round) is the big lump o' metal that is propelled at the target by the gauss rifle.

It's a matter of propaganda. For every Drac soldier killed by the Suns, the Dracs kill two of their own, usually in "accidents." That way, the numbers of casualties due to "war" can be tripled.

Amen, Mr. Hardenson. I remember when I first started the merc biz and started my training with a crazy ******* in Hanson's Roughriders on a little dirtball planet called Venaria (sounds like some disease, yeash). Guy liked to call himself "Dead Eye", though I'm not sure if its because he was a crack shot or if he had seen so much death. Regardless, that guy liked to shoot a machine gun straight at my mech every time I made a single mistake. 'Course, the thing wasn't strong enough to penetrate a mech with those few rounds, but it scared me straight. "You're dead", he'd say after every mistake, then he'd blast my back side. Lots of people called him a hard ***, but he was right. One mistake out there and you're chewin' on dirt.

All that you can do is keep your head out of the clouds, in the fight, and out of the way of bullets. Live fire teaches you what's comin'. You know, maybe it doesn't teach you to keep out of the way, but it damn sure gets you used to walking into it. The fear never goes away, but I think back on Vernaria I was more afraid of old Dead Eye gettin' me first.

No one else asking about the guys computer crashing? I can't help someone is snooping for his leads by planting a virus in his computer. After asking questions about the 'Goons and Battle Magic, even money it's Wolf Net making sure they don't have any leaks.

Great read!

But I gotta say. No amount of training or experience will save you from a gauss round to the cockpit, if your cockpit wasn't going to hold up.

I met Deadeye on a job once once (wastin a supply convoy if i remba rite), real tough sob
not the greatest fighter but he could take more hits than a wreckin ball
walked in the mess hall and he was there arguing with one of his recruits, kid was going on bout his daddy's atlas
ol' Deadeye wasting words trying to bark some wisdom into him "in real combat speed is life kid" but the kid would have none of it
kid died a few weeks later on some backwater rock, just can't tell some people i suppose
so yeah Deadeye was a mean ol bugga but really he just saw way too many of his recruits bite it
