mechwarrior 2 came out 17 years ago.
From mechwarrior 2 onwards the iconic mech has been the Timber Wolf.
If you don't considering the Timber Wolf to be the iconic mech then you might want to reconsider how much of an "angry old man" you check in as.
Flawed logic at its finest. More recent/over-used = iconic? By that logic:
When you think of a Terminator you think of Summer Glau?
When you think of Nick Fury it HAS to be Samuel L. Jackson?
When asked if Han or Greedo shot first, you answer "Greedo!"?
When you think of The Transformers you envision Shia LeBeouf running around like ******?
When someone asks you if you've heard the song Paint It Black you think of someone OTHER than the Rolling Stones?
"Iconic" is a subjective term and for you to imply that someone is "wrong" for what they might see as an "iconic" battlemech is pretty self-absorbed. As I posted earlier, I started playing in the Battletech Universe when it was called "Battledroids" (until Papa Lucas jumped all over them for that title). The VERY first mech I ever saw was a Warhammer. Therefore, in my mind, that shall ALWAYS be the "iconic" mech for me. That would go doubly for just about 80% of the players here at my local tabletop AND PC 'Tech gaming group. That doesn't make any of us "angry old men/women", that just means we started with the good, old box set that featured the Unseen Warhammer on the box and that is our first memory of the 'Tech Universe.
If someone asks me to picture Obi-Wan Kenobi I see Sir Alec Guiness, not Ewan McGregor who was supplanted Guiness as the "current" Obi-Wan and has had more screen time as Sir Alec Guiness even though Ewan McGregor is more recent.
