mechwarrior 2 came out 17 years ago.

From mechwarrior 2 onwards the iconic mech has been the Timber Wolf.

If you don't considering the Timber Wolf to be the iconic mech then you might want to reconsider how much of an "angry old man" you check in as.

Yes, all of us young coots who played a game 17 years ago as FASA marketed the Timber Wolf pretty much directly in to our face are just little noobs. I wonder if people ever stop to actually consider what they're suggesting? Most Mechwarrior fans, (MECHWARRIOR fans, not battletech) are 20+ years old now. Many of us are 25 to 30. If you played Mechwarrior 2 when you were 10 years old you'd be 27 years old now.

Flawed logic at its finest. More recent/over-used = iconic? By that logic:

When you think of a Terminator you think of Summer Glau?
When you think of Nick Fury it HAS to be Samuel L. Jackson?
When asked if Han or Greedo shot first, you answer "Greedo!"?
When you think of The Transformers you envision Shia LeBeouf running around like ******?
When someone asks you if you've heard the song Paint It Black you think of someone OTHER than the Rolling Stones?

"Iconic" is a subjective term and for you to imply that someone is "wrong" for what they might see as an "iconic" battlemech is pretty self-absorbed. As I posted earlier, I started playing in the Battletech Universe when it was called "Battledroids" (until Papa Lucas jumped all over them for that title). The VERY first mech I ever saw was a Warhammer. Therefore, in my mind, that shall ALWAYS be the "iconic" mech for me. That would go doubly for just about 80% of the players here at my local tabletop AND PC 'Tech gaming group. That doesn't make any of us "angry old men/women", that just means we started with the good, old box set that featured the Unseen Warhammer on the box and that is our first memory of the 'Tech Universe.

If someone asks me to picture Obi-Wan Kenobi I see Sir Alec Guiness, not Ewan McGregor who was supplanted Guiness as the "current" Obi-Wan and has had more screen time as Sir Alec Guiness even though Ewan McGregor is more recent.

OP is asking why there is no P51 Mustang in a WW2 game set during the Battle of Britain, despite being an iconic WW2 fighter.

Um. There were P51 mustangs at the battle of britain, they beat the japanese good.

Most Iconic? hmm... the Atlas.

Atlas? What's an Atlas?

The Timber Wolf is the iconic Clan Mech. The Atlas is the iconic Inner Sphere Mech (and it's been around a lot longer than the TW).

I say the Mackie would be the most iconic, but then, I'm old fashioned like that.

Officially first, but not terribly iconic. First doesn't mean icon.

As for the MadCat, its been cancelled, it was too cheesy, so they're never putting it in.

Nobody remembers the Timberworlf/MadCat any longer. It's not iconic.

Well although it might not be the most iconic mech ever, I think for a light mech it looks pretty cool.

The
Anubis

But then again we won't see this mech for another 13 years.

Tell me which Mech you think is the most iconic then?

To me (and many others) it's the Atlas.
Sure, you can picture the Timberwolf with its thin laser arms and missle racks. But I see the skull, the avatar of war for Battletech.

I started playing with this game:

I hardly consider the Mauler to be iconic.

If I had to pick the true iconic battlemech, it'd probably be the Atlas. It's graced the cover of several of the TT boxes, it's been in all of the Mechwarrior Games since MW2 Mercs, it's been in the CCG and the Clix game (though that hardly did it justice; hate those spikes), and MWO has used it as something of a poster boy (it showed up in the MW5 cinematic, and it showed up in lots of the images since, plus the scene in the Atlas promo where it walks out of the smoke is epic).

The Madcat may be widely known, and it may be widely feared/respected/lusted after, but I will never view it as iconic (though of course that tends to be in the eye of the beholder).

As for the OP, it's been answered hundreds (or even thousands) of times on the forums, and many times in this thread. Though the Madcat has perhaps been encountered by some random Periphery barbarians, no truly civilized forces (read: Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth) will encounter one for quite some time yet.

Eek... After four pages of this, I feel that my weighing in on the subject would seem, well, rather dull. I shall do so how ever!

The oldies are awesome, but they no longer seem to be the face of the game. It makes me feel kinda old, but I remember when FASA brought out the clan mechs. Fighting them on the table top was a PITA!! They shot better, longer, and cooler than just about anything out there.

But, if you'd notice... they begain copying IS designs.

One that they copied of note: The WARHAMMER.

Yes, several others aswell, but I always loved that old boat. That and the Rifleman. Two of my all time faves, that we will never see here.

Such is life.

Warhammer, Marauder and Timberwolf. The tree most iconic mechs for me.

Gee, And here I was, happy for regular content updates. At the rate PGI is going, man, you won't get a madcat till well after the clans drop, unless they've been holding out on us.

Damn, was hoping for a Madcat. Go figure.

In the meantime, I guess I can duck tape some Marauder arms onto my Cata and pretend.

1. As others have said, clans haven't really arrived yet...well....i think they have somewhat (scouts etc) but the IS thinks its nothing atm.......

2. There is no Marauder yet. So until we get a Marauder, you can't have a Timberwolf as it can't exist without a marauder existing.........im sorry but thats how it goes. :) ......PS : i wish pgi did it that way....but alas what can I do without giving them millions of dollars...
