I got a new AMD Radeon 7950 to replace my old Nvidia video card- probably install it sometime next week. I normally download the latest drivers on a new install but sometimes the latest is not always the greatest, if you know what I mean. If there's a "preferred" driver version the AMD guys are using, I would appreciate a heads up.

This is in reference to MWO, of course. It doesn't matter if there's a better optimized driver for other games since I'm not playing anything else, right now.

Backwards this time, the preferred for the 7k series is the 12.11 beta drivers

http://support.amd.c...betadriver.aspx

HUGE performance gains over 12.10!!! implementation of new tech built into the cards that wasn't supported until 12.11

Grats on your new card btw ^^

Thanks for the quick replies, I'm going to download those drivers, now. I read the latest drivers made the 7900 series significantly better but I didn't know how well that translated to MWO.

I would be really, really happy if I could get 88 fps in MWO. I get about 30 avg. now but my min is 18~20. That's pretty marginal.

Good luck with that, I'm running 2x 7950 on an over clocked 3930k...and with vsync off I clock 5 0-65ish.

Game not optimized.

If you're still running xp, drivers are the last of your problems...

Every time I see your signature I get wheel of morality stuck in my head, thanx

Fyi, I had 2x Nvidia GTX260 in SLI (SLI not supported so really one card in-game). Average across all maps was 40 fps with custom settings (High w/ AA turned off).

Put the 7950 in tonight and loaded the beta 12.11 drivers. Pretty small sample size but I'm averaging 52 fps on High settings with AA on. Looks better and 25% faster.

Minimum fps has gone from about 20 to 35. Much more important number than average fps, imo. Now I'm getting 75% better frame rates when things get really hairy.

So, pretty happy so far. Looking forward to some optimizations and DX11 but don't want to be greedy.

Good choice on the 7950, but are you sure SLI isn't working there to some extent? If so, that 7950 is really bogged down right now, because a 7950 is way more than 25% more powerful than either of the 260 variants. Unless I'm doing my math wrong, it's actually significantly more than 75% more powerful, for that matter (it's about 120% better than a 6790, which should be close to the 260 in power). Out of curiosity, what CPU are you pairing that with?

Just got back or I would have replied sooner.

I had anti-aliasing turned off on the Nvidia GTX260 setup. The 7950 is 25% better with AA on than the 260 was with AA off. Turning on AA would have dropped my fps to almost unplayable levels, my guess is about 20-25 fps. If that's correct, the 7950 is actually 100% - 130% faster. So, your 120% is probably pretty accurate.

My current setup: i5-2500k @ 3.3 GHz on an Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 motherboard with 16 gig memory. OCZ Vertex4 SSD w/Win7 64-bit loaded.

I was just going to come here and say the same thing that apparently everyone else said: beta drivers are where it's at right now.

An added bonus is it fixes the Photoshop CS6 bug on Windows 8...
