Hello MW:O Community,

I've been wondering what rating MW:O will receive and whether it's important to the overall game, marketing wise. At the moment i can't imagine it being any more than a 12 due to the fact it would probably be classed as fantasy violence. I mean there's no blood and as so far we don't know what there will be avatar wise. Obviously PGI can't be held responisble or possible monitor what everyone says to each other and generally the ratings will say it's an online game.

Previous Mechwarrior titles have been in the ESRB Teen zone.

So, do you guys think that MW:O should be rated higher because it's a purely online game? Would you be cool with a 12 year old lancemate?

Personally on one hand i think 12 would be suitable, i was 9 when i first played Mechwarrior 3. However the 22 year old me can't imagine anyone that young playing it. Just interested to see what other people think and feel.

Since it's an online only game, but with no violence against people (just robots) probably a teen rating with a disclaimer that online experience may vary. Not that anyone really uses disclaimers anyway.

depends if your basing the rating on the game alone or whats going to be screamed at each other in the comm.

If it isn't rated T for Teen, I'd be very surprised.

I don't even see how it'd be rated T. If they add Elementals or Infantry, then my God, we're talking T or even pushing R. But without them, or horrendously disturbing cockpit kill animation, I see no reason MWO wouldn't be an E. They'd literally have to throw something in to push it down to a T on purpose, sort of how movies are scared to release with PG and sometimes add stuff to hit PG-13.

I'd be totally OK with waves of NPC infantry being obliterated with flamers and LBX, of course, if they ever feel like pushing it up to an M down the line.

EDIT: Well, huh. MW4 got rated T for violence; I half wonder if it's because of the cut scenes that involving killing people / people dying. Because in-game robot violence without humanoid representations is NOT enough to push a T rating on other titles.

I'd rate it just like every other online game, Don't let your kids play it if you don't want them to learn swear word and other forms of crude language.

I'm just interested in seeing what rating people would like. I'm aware of how important marketing wise ratings are for films and revenues, such as the recent Hunger Games censorship in the U.K to get it a 12A rating as the film company would make a loss at a 15 certificate, so certain cuts were made. I assume it's the same for games marketing wise. Be interesting to know what audience demographic PGI are gunning for.

But yeah as Monky mentioned you can slap a disclaimer on it.

13+ for Violence and Language. Oh, and hot female mechwarriors in bikinis... OK, I better make it fair to Paul... also Male Mechwarriors in banana hammocks. Because we all know sex sells.

I am pretty sure ESRB does not rate online experiences at least that is what it says for every game that has a single player and multiplayer aspect

I'd say the only important rating to worry about is your MRBC rating.
C?
B+?

Can I get an "A" anybody?

World of Warcraft was given a ESRB rating of a T, which is interesting as it's a purely online experience.

Maybe having a in game voice option makes a difference or maybe all online aspects are just un-classifiable. I suppose all they can do is classify what they see, not what the people playing it might say or do.

Maybe if it is an all online experience they can rate it and only say they dont rate online experiences for those games that have both online and single player modes
