Again…

Pouring over my TROs, I find it very interesting how as readouts progress, you find more and more balance if not symmetry in the Mech designs.

A lot of the early Mechs have that “Lets throw some weapons at it and see what sticks” feel to them… Which leads to a lot of Mechs where the weapons are asymmetrical and or singular and their heat balance is not balanced.

As you progress into the middle year Mechs to include the Clan tech, you begin to see much more balance and symmetry in the designs. Very few Mechs of this tech level do not have weapons mirrored and or do not present with variants that cover the short, medium, long range spectrum by default.

When you get into the later TROs thing get weird again… Suddenly you are confronted with these uber-Mechs, that again, forgo symmetry and or are fielding insane levels of tech and firepower that multiple early TRO mechs cannot match even in a lance or star!

My personal preference leans toward the symmetrical designs. That said, I have this bizarre attachment to my beloved Zeus even though it is a perfect example of asymmetrical design?... Go figure that one eh? :P

Out of curiosity which styling’s do the rest of you tend to lean toward?

The miniture, the MW3 model and the TRO of the Cauldron Born has a symetrical chassis, just the pods themselves might not be.

I don't recommend using MW4 as a reliable point of reference for Battletech Mechs.

Either way does it realy matter?

I want a mech that has decent capabilities. Cosemetics are meh, though a fearsome (asymetrical) look can be fear inducing if not a large mech.

Technically, all mechs are asymmetrical, if you look at them from a vertical standpoint. :P Either way, I don't really care what they look like, so long as it does the job I want it to.

When I speak of symmetry I mean mirrored hemispheres... i.e.

Symmetrical = Timberwolf: paired (Rt & Lt) Lrg Lasers, Medium Lasers, LRM20, MGs.

Asymmetrical = Zeus: 1 Lrg. Laser, 1 LRM15, 2 Med Lasers, 1 A/C5

Much more interesting question than some that have been appearing lately. Maybe not so important in the grand scheme of things but better than arguing about what features may or may not appear in the game itself. I went symetrical although I don't always make them that way.

I try like hell at least once a week to foster discussion that is interesting... keeping to topics that hopefully can be discussed without it spiraling into a urinating session. :P

[Edit] I hate the censor / filter....

Much much much prefer asymmetrical designs. It has much more of a 'cobbled together from salvaged parts' feel to it. It definately suits IS mechs more than clan - specialist mechs for specialist roles, as oppose to Clan Omni tech which lends itself to more rounded battlefield roles

I prefer the elegance of a symmetrically loaded mech. In MW4 Mercs I loved to take a Mauler and load it up with two light gauss rifles, two Clan SRM 6's and two Clan ER Large Lasers. Ahh, perfect symmetry, and raw power to boot.

Like most people I prefer functionality over design, which is why I prefer it to look functional. Assymety has that mechanistic, industrial feel, a machine built for war not for the parade ground. I still like symmetrical designs all the same, especially if they've got the armoured, chunky look down like the MWO version Catapult (which is the best looking MWO mech so far imho).

The Loki is my favorite Mech in appearance, largely because of its rugged look, but because it is symmetrical save for a few choice bits. Star League Mechs work when they're symmetrical (abeit goofy) like the Champion, but look too bizarre if it's got irregularities, like the Hermes.
And really, I just have a problem with Mechs with no torso twist, but the cockpit rotates.

I go for old rusty asymmetrical junkpiles myself. They got so much charm.
Whenever i enter Blender to work on a mech it often turns out asymmetrical and junky with partially exposed hydraulics.
Been a while since i worked on those ol' clunkers....Worked a bit too hard and got tired of it.

3050 symmetrical are my picks, eventhough I tend to use both the Summoner and Ice Ferret from time to time.

My other usuals are the: Timber Wolf, Pouncer, Adder, Gargoyle, Mad Dog and Nova.

I wonder is my being ambidextrous has anything to do with my penchant for symmetry?

... It's either that or it's my OCD kicking in again. ;)

3067 (3073) - only because that is where my ongoing 23 year BT campaign is presently set.

I have no real preference in regards to symmetry, but I voted to balance the results....

Asymmetrical, it's the way to go! All the way back to the knights and barbarians with a shield or buckler on one arm and a sword/knife/hammer/whatever in the other hand.

I like symmetry. I also chose the 3050 tech level because I feel like (atleast from an IS view) they've got a great mix of tech so you can build some REALLY fun 'Mechs ;)

For example:

My Wolverine. Beautiful design and when I modified it I changed the weapons out to:

Ultra AC5 (RA), Medium Laser x3 (LT/HD/RT), Stream SRM 2 x2 (LT)

Keeps it true to the original 'Mech's weapon points but allows for more firepower (I also subbed in an Endo Chassis and Ferro Armor). But I had to have 2 or 3 Mediums, and 2 Streaks I didn't want just one. I like my 'Mech to feel balanced :D

Being in a Merc Corp, we could buy 3 Dragons, with some change left over for ammo, for the cost of 1 of them Cauldron-Born thingamabobs. Who cares what they look like... ;)

P.S. 3050 , Symmetrical.

i prefer asymmetrical mechs. looks like they are actually put together for the task at hand (i.e. having one big main weapon on one side). having said that i do like the catapult and the stalker.
