Light Group (80-200)
Medium Group (205-400)
Heavy Group ( 405-600)
Assault Group ( 605-800)
When you click ready-Button tonnage is added to the group and the category in which it would drop is displayed. So the group can play around until the fit the category they wanted.
possible Scenarios: 4 Hunchbacks facing 6 Jenner or 8 Commando in light category, 4 Atlas facing 8 Hunchies (or 4 Hunch + 4 Cicada) in medium category, 3 Atlas and 5 Hunchies facing 6 Streak-Cats and 1 Atlas in heavy category etc. A group of 8 Cicadas or Jenner would be a medium group, but a mixed enemy team can have more tonnage f.e. 1 Atlas, 1 Dragon, 1 Cat, 3 Centurion, 1 Commando against them.
And as a bonus-option give the group leader the possibility to switch the group to "No restriction" instead to make unrestricted 8v8 possible too.

I will be happy to have 8-man back as-is tomorrow. I also will be patient and wait for PGI to introduce phase 3 of matchmaking rather than demand they waste resources mucking around with the phase 2 we are given.

Glad that the 1st BBR has been training so we are not overly reliant on missile fire support platforms.

I like the idea of "win with what you have vs. whatever they bring" but I just know three will be some highly... abusive teams.

Look on the bright side, "Chase the @#$%ing Squirrel!" will be mandatory for such teams.

Battle Value, it is a point-based system for the Classic BattleTech board game to measure the battlefield value of a given unit and to balance opposing forces.
I think BV can be added to MWO to truly balance matches.

Don't forget we are in beta and what better way to test the balance of: weapons, chassis and advanced tech than to have organised teams choose what they think is best and seeing who comes out on top. PGI can then go and tweak systems till they get it to a point they feel is balanced (or at least as balanced as they like).

An Ideal set of 8 to deal with god-knows-what would be... 2 of each.
2 lights(70 tons)
2 Mediums(100tons)
2 Heavy(130tons)
2 Assault(200tons)
= 500 tons. See? I am a math genius....
You could make the 2 lights commandos, and have 20 tons to give to the mediums, upgrading them to 2 dragons. or upgrading the 2 catapults, to 2 cataphracts.... the possibilites are unlimited.... all within a 500 ton limit.
Perhaps. Or perhaps not. :-)
I believe the challenge in an unrestricted format has more to do with preparation prior to the match start in terms of working with the team and developing tactics based on the preferred choices of the 8 players you have online. In other words, practicing with your team and their preferred mechs to develop coordinated tactics to take advantage of what your are fielding in that particular match.
Out of enough of these matches you begin developing a training and doctrine program for your unit, institutional training to guide unit leaders and lance commanders to victory with a diverse set of mechs. Not necessarily 2/2/2/2 or whatnot.

This. People are not only good at different mechs, they are also good in different sub roles. You might want more LRM boats than the average team if you have a dedicated spotter/sniper Light (probably going to be an ECM/BAP Gauss raven after update) - this drops your Medium and Assault usage and ups the Heavy composition. You might want more Assaults than usual if you have multiple Light assassin specialists so they can draw the enemy team's attention.

I was thinking that if premades were forced to a tonnage limit of say 500 tons, you would still be able to field a whole team of ECM mechs.
Although Im sure some will still make all ECM teams... like say 3 atlas DDC and 5 ECM cicadas or 4 Atlas DDC and 4 ECM commando, but even if they do, I believe the more balanced team using mostly heavies and 50 ton mediums would out play such a team. Or if not... then perhaps ECM needs to be changed..
Or teams would have to be matched by BV and tonnage. Its gonna be difficult for PGI to get this worked out...

All the 8v8 drops I've been in have been VERY heavy... mostly Assaults, minimal use of heavies. Rarely a light.
Anyone willing to consider drop weight limits now?
