The weekly news thing where the PGI guy talked about repainting his Ilya was a huge ray of hope for me. If we're never getting the ability to recolour, then that was kind of a mean thing to include in a public announcement!
In a way, this discussion leads directly back to the MC pricing on things, which I think most of us agree are a little high. (Virtual Christmas lights for your cockpit: $7. Actual Christmas lights you can wrap around your monitor, house cats, or head: $2.) Boutique pricing belongs in a boutique atmosphere. If we're all willing to spend this kind of money on things like Founder's packages and Hero mechs, basic amenities like swapping colours should be a given.

Prices are extreme indeed, I seriously doubt anybody will buy those. They also look really ugly in my opinion.
Same goes for 'mech prices though. Buying 'mechs for MC is very expensive. A 'mech can cost up to 25 USD...
P.s. I'd love to see your house cats wrapped in christmas lights

Founder and Hero 'Mechs should be non-paintable. They are unique, and should remain visibly so.

They are NOT unique. Not in a long shot. There's thousands of them.
There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to slap some paint on them.

I would love to customise the paintjob of my Ilyaphract. And my Yen-Lo-Wang.
We paid alot of bucks for those hero mechs, and there's no way to buy them with C-Bills - being able to paint them would only be fair, especially considering the price!
Same goes for the founder mechs, really.
I don't mind if we can't change the camo pattern (the sun for the Yen-Low-Wang and the Stars for the Ilya), but at least let us change the colours the unique patterns use.

This is too important for that to happen!

I see no reason why this should not be allowed as the founders mechs and hero mechs still carry a unique tag. If some founders are even willing to pay a small amount of MC for the option to apply a different skin that can be painted it really makes little sense for PGI to not sell the option to change the skin on the founders mechs.

By default the striping is off-white even though the camo editor shows a bright yellow swatch, and most alternate colors don't really have an effect on the striping either. The colors' transparency levels seem really high (maybe it's just like this in mechlab *shrug*), making the camo spec kind of pointless for this founder mech.
The yellow makes the paintjob look awesome

Where's the yellow?

For a more serious reply, it vanished the second you made changes to your "original" founders skin.
One more reason for why we need painting ability for founder & hero mechs.

At any rate, I would expect them to realize this at some point and implement full re-paintability for all mechs. I have no problem with skin textures remaining the same.

Yeah, I would have to agree with this, now that we've entered the era of ECM. What started out as a request for aesthetic equality (an aspect I still believe in!), has, in the last few days, become a more serious matter of needing to be identified in massive skirmishes where everyone is sensor blind. Even if you're not in a unit, and playing pick up, your team mates need to be able to recognize the founder/hero mech that was standing next to them when the match began.
On a larger point - everyone who plays pick-up should consider abandoning their stock paint.
And I should probably edit my opening pitch to reflect this development...

I haven't even thought of this aspect yet! You are right! Good call!

It's too cold to stand in front of Walmart with a 4-ton clipboard.
