No zombie game I can think of has got it right, but this ARMA 2 mod might be the first. I plan on getting it when I have my new PC. It is still in early Alpha, and their are bugs to be kinked out.
This isn't like Dead Island, or Left 4 Dead, or Dead Rising. You are put in a 50 player server on a very large island with a few bandages and a revolver. If you die, you are dead. You do not get to respawn. Your character, all his items, and all his achievements, are gone. If you die, you play another character. The average life expectancy is about 5 hours.
What this does is make you fear for your life, and you play as you would in a real life scenario. There is a barn full of weapons, but if I fire on at the zombie near it, I will alert the entire town and likely be overwhelmed and eaten. Do I take the shot? My car which I have finally repaired to a working state breaks down on the highway, and a group of bandits threaten me. Do I run, do I surrender, do I fight, perhaps I can try to join their cause? It really intrigues me.

What about swimming onto the smaller island and getting some good tech from a millitary base stationed there?

This game intrigues me, I actually went looking at the price of ArmA Online and the expansion just so I could try out this mod, maybe I'll look into getting it later this year.

Day Z is a fun mod, but it barely qualifies as a zombie survival game.

The Dead Linger on the other hand intends to be the ultimate zombie survival game with a focus on actual survival and realism and not just see who can kill the most zombies. Zombies can only be killed via destruction of the brain (unlike Day Z), the map will be a randomly generated world the size of a small planet (roughly 25.000 km to Day Z's 225 km2), a full barricading and crafting system, full control of vehicles (want to bolt some metal sheets to any area of your pickup truck? go ahead), no magic zombies like in RE or L4D, just the classic shamblers (even a single zombie can be deadly if you're not paying attention), every building in the game is fully explorable and detailed, you can also explore sewers, caves and metro stations/tunnels and there will be up to 500 zombies at any one time.
The game is 25$ for now with an alpha release in 4-6 months.

you cant get to Utes from Cherna
In some other news BIS has stated that they are going to officially support Day Z. If this means some engine or feature tweaks, or including the mod data in the next patch (or both) is a little unclear. What ever the method, I am waiting till a more "stable" full beta release to play more, so i dont have to patch the game 2 times a day

The mod was made by a BIA developer (BIS Australia studios, who works on the VBS training tool), So this is not totally unexpected.
